Just bought a .049 and I have some concerns
Hello,
I just bought myself a .049 Baby Bee (I actually wanted a .020, but they don't seem to be available where I live). I'm very happy (despite having to spend a considerable amount of money on it). I have some concerns though:
1. how long does it run on one tank? And I mean the built-in tank, of course.
2. can i run it in any position? I don't like models that look like rhinos, so I would like to have the cylinder hanging down.
3. how much exactly does it weigh (with the tank empty)?
Thanks in advance for your help.

Welcome!
About 90 seconds on one tank.
Yes but keep the needle facing upwards.
Be sure to use plenty of castor in Your fuel

Hi Dirk
Welcome to the madhouse.
I've got a new Black Widow in front of me and the box says 64.2 grams (don't forget the .2 ) I think the
049's are all within a few grams of each other.
Best
John

The babe bee's weigh 1.8 oz unless it is an estes one they weigh a bit more.
Re: Just bought a .049 and I have some concerns
It IS possible to mount the whole engine on it's side (the internal pick-up tube HAS to be where the fuel is gonna be in flight). You will have to hold it on it's side for filling and install a piece of plugged plastic tubing over one of the filler necks when it's topped.
Once started, the fuel will not run out of the single open filler because that's the only place for it to draw air as the fuel is used.
While I've only done it on a test stand, I think it would also be possible and practical to run an external tank to the engine using this method, extending it's run time without a drilling a hole in the tank or installing a plastic backplate.

Looks like it would fly Kim. Maybe fill the motor tank before connecting the external, so it acts as a surge tank. A big offroad fuel filter will act as a surge tank for a backplate motor, for when you have to run a long or extra long fuel line. Also gives you a bit more run time with the added capacity. Just pull the screens or filtering media out and use the canister.

That is a neat setup, my Black Widow seems to suck fuel out the vent tubes from the prop wash. I was thinking about trying to angle the tubes towards the prop wash.
Have you ever tried that?

Re: Just bought a .049 and I have some concerns
Thanks for all the answers!
How do you guys think: what size of a model would this engine fit best? I got inspired by the Littlest Stick:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M38HyKCXZO4
It is about 150g, 55cm wingspan and 6,3dm2 wing area. It is intended for a .020. How much larger would it have to be for a .049? I am thinking, 65cm, 200g, 7dm2? The .049 is only a bit heavier than the .020, so if I could get away with not having the airframe structure reinforced to contained a more powerful engine, then it would only need to be a tiny bit bigger.

Hello Dirk,
Where you from? Cause you mention there are no .020 available in your area.
The video is from The Netherlands, and there are a lot of cox engines there;)

Re: Just bought a .049 and I have some concerns
Poland. We just have one supplier here, and they only have .049s. Obviously, I could buy a .020 abroad... actually, I visited Amsterdam not that long ago, but somehow it didn't occur to me to search for engines. I guess a .049 will as good as any other, I will only have to do the addtional work of rescaling the model.

You could get away with a babe bee on that if you can deal with fast planes!
Re: Just bought a .049 and I have some concerns
And I would add that inverted engines, no matter the type, are easier to flood than in other positions.
New "raw stock" PeeWee .020's are available @ www.selecthobbies.com for $54.95.

Yes but they are somewhat over priced, on ebay you can get one for 1/2 of that but Steve is dependable so if you want a new one get it from him.

The simplest way to run a Babe Bee with the cylinder inverted is to release the 4 tank screws, rotate the ENGINE 180 degrees while holding the tank in it's normal position, tighten tank screws. Job done! This is the official Cox instruction on how to do it. In the photo is my SureStart installed as a "Sidewinder" installation in the same way. This avoids any tank/fuel pickup, or any other complications.

Indra:
My intent was to illustrate the .020's are available new from Steve. If Dirk doesn't want to go through the e-bay ordeal, this would be an option.
Just suggestion.
BTW, no Cox luck at the "colletables" show yesterday. None were found.

Yup, exactly what I did. Thanks!
I realize that I can buy one on ebay, but so far I was too lazy to create myself a Paypal account. Also, the shipping prices...

It would be helpful if you would post your location rather than us guess where you are located.
It would better help us with addressing your concerns.. Remember this is a world-wide forum.
