120 seconds of Le Mons (Lemons) - Wreck on lap two........
Mark over today so we ran the Cox Mercedes...….again. First time was when I ran it weeks ago, second stint was less successful.
Started out badly. Mark holding the front, me cranking the right rear wheel. Started, died. Fuel leaking from the tank, on me as I hate overtightening the machine screws and cratering the back plate. During the disassembly, (everything has to come apart to get to the engine) the repaired hood pivots broke and the hood came off. Kind of a big deal as the hood provides some structural stability to the front suspension when locked down.
No matter this thing is going to run. Tightened down the backplate screws and reassembled. Engine is a runner. A few flips of the rear wheel and she took off. Release angle is important on these, ask Roddie, and my release was not up to snuff. Wrapped itself around the tether line in the first quarter lap.
No matter, second release was perfect. Running well it made a couple of circles then it shed the whole front suspension along with the wheels. Barely slowed it down skidding around the circle on it's front end.
After a good two minutes it finally gave up and we picked up the pieces. Smashed hood, nose piece, wheel, and grill. The fun we had was worth it. Mark has video but no way to post it unless he goes to youtube.
Repairable but I'm retiring it with good feelings. As I mentioned before almost everything on this was broken when I got it. Repairs were make-shift at best. You just cannot repair plastic to original strength especially at stress points and these have many.
I have at least three more in runner condition that are in much better shape. Looking forward to doing those.

Oh man! I hope you have good insurance.
Time hasn't been good on that oil soaked plastic, same issue with my Baja Bug. I pretty much stopped touching it since it seemed that every time I picked it up, something had to break.
Should get that video uploaded!

You know, I am not sad, it died doing what it was meant to do. Kudos to you good sir for sending it off in a blaze of glory.
Now you can breathe life into your latest purchase by scavenging what’s left.
Good on you Bob! You are my new hero.

Hi Bob
You could always use it to make a crash diorama. Bit of black wet and dry paper for track. Broken fence.
The crash was real, just the scene is not.

Thanks guys, it was fun. Maybe Mark can glean pictures from his video.
I might do that Dave and take a staged picture. But I have a spare wheel and with maximum effort put it back together again. First one I got, sentimental you know.
#17 is coming along well, Mud is supplying expertise and the missing parts.

Bob, that was quite the ambitious undertaking with what you had to work with and repair. I'm sure the designers and engineers at Cox never intended to have their gas powered plastic models to be performing as they were some 58 years later. Truly a valiant effort.
I hope Mark can post the videos to you tube.

Best I can do on short notice Dave.
This needs something of your creative abilities to pull off. DrCox and Mark D too. 2X3' diorama with sand, fence, road, skid marks, Castrol signs, smoking engine, (thinking Rat Finks smoking tires here) etc. etc.
Not my best side. I'm just eager to put humpty dumpty back together again. Notice the hole in the nose piece (second picture) now filled with epoxy. It had a 1 1/2" machine screw through it all the way through the pan holding the whole front end together when I got it. Jason's custom mounts held for awhile but the rocking pins on the front swing arms eventually did them in.
Next victim old #3. Actually in pretty good shape. Broken windshield and both locating tabs on the rear swing arms are broken. Old #2's will substitute and ride again.

Mark videoed it with his tablet and sent me some of it. Takes to long to load the whole thing. I captured a picture from the video.
By this time it had lost it's front wheels and suspension.
Fangio got a bath and is fully recovered. Not so his W-196.

Thanks Dave, the picture is less than adequate, it's that short notice thing. It was fun to put together though, I guess I staged it several different ways using what was on hand. Give me a fifth grade class and some common materials and I bet they could come up with something spectacular.
That's the problem Eric, like Rod I don't like loose ends, preferring to scavenge parts where I can. Rims (spokes), rear swing arms, windshield assemblies, broken pivot points and mounting pylons are the major problems with these.
Old #2 is coming back...……..

Yes, for all it's troubles (when got it, parts of it were wired together among other things) I have enjoyed this one more than any other.
Major problems still exist. The main ones being the reliefs for the front suspension pegs and the motor mounts. The nose piece reliefs are ok, but the pans are broken allowing excessive play in the swing arms. Also the upper and lower mounting posts that Jason supplied are (were) mostly gone.
The only cure is to permanently glue the lower pegs into the pans reliefs and establish a mechanical bond between the pan and the nose piece. Hence the 8/32's tapped into the nose pieces posts. The bitter ends will be cut off and filed down to the surface. Gluing, a combination of red tube Testors and epoxies just did not work.
The other major problem (there are multitudes of others) are the motor mounts. The lower cradle is comprised of three partitions. The front two support the upper cradle, the one toward the rear of the car provides frontal support for the engines mounting tabs. I have two of these where the outer part of the partition is broken off allowing excessive engine vibration.
In addition, the upper cradle has been modified as the PO dumped the original stunt engine for a vented backplate. The upper cradle snaps over the engines top mounting lugs and is held by two self tappers coming up from underneath. To fit over the vents this cradle has part of it cut away forfeiting some structural rigidity.
Picture heavy comparison with an unbroken example. The grill is a test loaner from #3 while the original recuperates.
None of this is meant to scare you off from obtaining one of these. Old #2 is a special case, of the 17 I have most were received in very good to excellent condition. But some have needed repairs. 58 years can take a toll even while sitting static.
Some day I will do a list of what a buyer should look for. The list is long.
There are several nice examples on ebay right now. IMHO prices are way too high. If your lucky you may find one at a yard sale or flea market for ten bucks.
