I saw that glow head in the ebay pictures. It’s interesting, not sure what it is off of. Should be easy to find out though.
The car looks a little rougher than I expected. I think there is special software on ebay that makes things appear better.
Still, it is totally fixable apart from the small body cracks. It will never be as new, but should make for a beautiful display once cleaned up and restored. I hope you choose to run it. It’s definitely a good candidate for that. It deserves another couple laps before permanent retirement.

Yes, that's my plan Ron. Clean it up, get it tight and run it a few laps. It will never be a hangar queen.
A friend of mine has a plastic repair tool/kit. Electric with various kinds of plastic "solder", tubes, and sheet. I can repair those posts, even without it. Can't do much with the hole drilled through the nose though. I might highlight it with a chrome filler or something.
Hacked seat bolted to the floor and thread wrapped around the suspension to stabilize the drive shaft for some reason that I will have to figure out. At first I thought it was tether line that got wrapped up.
DPO used a long 4/40 through the nose to hold the suspension in place and attach the bottom, then cut it leaving a flange. Took drastic measures to get it apart.
I don't mind it being more beat up than I expected. Reminds me of some of the trashed Enyas I used to buy. Nothing I like better than making something out of nothing.
Thankfully the ring and pinion in the differential must be good as it turns smoothly. I might take it apart and put some 90 wt. in there .
Do those wheels come off the axles? Anybody......

One of the screws in the rear end is an oil hole, you can tell the one pretty easy, it different than the others.
the spinners are press fit to the wheel, under the spinners is a C clip.

Kid toys Bob, with Kid fixes.
I can’t see why the string is there. I am sure you will find out though. I am really envious that you get to play with that. I could afford one of my own, just into expensive motorcycles at the moment.
Make it shine!

Thanks all for your help.
I located that oil filler screw Rene, center one no attachment. And thanks Mud for the heads-up re the windshield. I have been treating it rather casually. I tried to remove it but it appears to be stuck, PO might have glued it on as one of the screws holes is hogged out. Will figure it out though. And ya, Mark has the corner on the odd parts stuff. I was hoping it was original to the engine. Curious, no top fin. This must be an early example though unless the engine has been replaced. Thin wall and tapered case. All I have seen so far have been of the QZ variety. Engine will be the last attended to. Save the best for last, nothing I enjoy more than carefully taking engines apart. Big or small.
Proceeding the least invasive way. Dish detergent soak in warm water, then carefully cleaning the nooks. First and second layers off, two more to go then scrape off old cement and build back up. No runway super model here, more like Ma Kettle in her last days.
I still have to disassemble the suspension and differential. Give me a month.

Took the engine apart today. Locked up solid. I had let it soak for three days with a tank full of Remoil and piston/cylinder soak. Still would not free-up. Worried that heat might distort the fan I replaced it with a prop. Heat works, pulled it through. Replaced the cylinder head and was rewarded with compression. Star reed is reusable.
As I mentioned, all of these that I have seen have come with mufflers that look like the #450 QZ but the W-196 was manufactured around 1961 and the 450 didn't arrive until around 1966. It has the thimble drome stamped fuel tank, thin wall #2 cylinder with a tapered case like all Mercedes models that I have seen but mine is missing the muffler. But..........but others have the vent in the fuel tank like stunt engines not in the back plate like mine, so it could be a replacement engine, or not? Could be an early example or maybe someone just removed the muffler. I had the muffler assembly, but gave them all away. I might remove one from a QZ just to make it more authentic.
Italics edit add.
I still think that that glow head is cool. Good too once you get past the rust.

Allways happy to lend a hand or advise, but the screw hole note was from crankbndr, not me.
So, Thanks Crank!
We will be waiting for a excellent rebuild and circle run video!

Sorry for the mix-up CB/Rene. "Call me anything but late for supper"
Pretty sure now that's a replacement engine. Looks like the half moon plastic spacer/mount has been chipped away at the top to clear the twin filler/vents. Can't figure that one out, the engine is the most protected, durable part of the whole model.

Yeah, replacement engine for sure. No vent in the four CC tank, looks like a standard 350 otherwise. I cannot find another engine with a vented 4cc tank but I will substitute a better muffled engine for the one that came in it.
Disappointing little bugger, there isn't a part that hasn't suffered some sort of damage not really evident in the sellers ad. But, what I live for and it seals it's fate as a runner.
Fixing the hood pivot is my first priority. A head scratchier, I finally decided to use banana plug insulators. They are tapered and by cutting to length I found a perfect fit for the male pivot. Red tube cement works very well if left to cure.
Pylons next. Makes a mess.

What a cool project Robert! Seriously.. you're sOoOo "the man" for this job. This old Cox model was destined to come into your hands!
This particular Cox model has intrigued me.. and I have saved numerous images of various builds.. by a few modelers who've done restorations. I'd be happy to share images with you.. if you think it will help to reassemble the car.

Re: ebay Cox Mercedes, rough.....but check out that glow head.
I must admit roddie I was going to PM you as the resident idea guy here for suggestions on how to repair those broken pivots and pylons, but I happened across the insulators which will work fine. Besides, they are matching red.
But, I went a little wild last night and won this used but rather nice example. It's missing the windshield but the one from my broken car will substitute. I wanted it also to use as a guide to repair my present one. Besides, I wanted one with the correct engine. It comes complete only missing the box.
I'm not a model car guy, much preferring airplanes. But like you, these fascinate me.

Looks good Ron! I have not seen a glow head like that before, even in many years of collecting. Lets hear that little 049 Crank Up!!

Re: ebay Cox Mercedes, rough.....but check out that glow head.
Thanks, The string turned out to be fine wire.
One of the gearbox fingers is broken off. Dandy!! The reason for the wire. Whoever ran this model wasn't kind to it. Virtually everything fixed or moveable is broken or damaged. I have no idea how I'm going to add that missing finger. I have a mixture of fine eyeglasses screws. Maybe I can drill a hole and screw it in. I will figure something.
My hood fix works, only needs to pivot on the front clip. The part that attaches to the hood will be permanently cemented.
Looks nasty now, but by the time I finish messing around with it, it may look a lot worse.
I wonder if these parts could be 3D printed. I have been looking a 3D printers and they are surprisingly affordable.

Re: ebay Cox Mercedes, rough.....but check out that glow head.
Snowed in today so I worked on the Mercedes mess. Attacked the missing "finger" on the differential (pictures above). Limits travel and provides a little slop between the fingers and the suspension.
Limited in what I could do. Gluing on a plastic piece would not stand the hammering of the suspension so I drilled a small hole in the thickest part and cut a brad to fit. Near zero area to work with and the hole intruded into the boss for the drive shaft, not intended but it worked to my benefit. Put a drop of CA on the pin and carefully with the Dremel and an ideally tapered stone ground the pin to the circumference of the hole which when assembled locked it securely in place.
So far the pin has held despite being knocked around during handling and assembly. Before I put it all together I will probably add some heat shrink tubing to the pin.
Not something that I wanted to do, but I had little choice the differential was useless as it was.
BTW the "new" Cox Mercedes despite eight days on the road (from Michigan) is not here yet. It spent two days in Charleston WV not too far away and somehow this morning it's in Baltimore Maryland. Flew right past my house on the way over there. I hope he packed it well.

Is it coming Fedex, USPS or UPS? Sometimes they go through hubs even though it makes absolutely no sense.

USPS Ron, Seller shipped it "Expedited shipping" which must mean First Class. $10.15 cheap enough but I would rather have him ship it priority.
