Spitzy .045 Engine
Hi again. So, I just gave this little guy a bath in antifreeze and had a chance to put it together. It is an Anderson Spitzy #6 .045. Anyways, I am looking forward to putting this thing on the block and see if I can get her running well. Should be an interesting little thing. It is slightly rough, but overall complete. As stated, nothing too special, but just wanted to share.
On another note, does anyone happen to know what the #6 on the fuel tank above 'Spitzy' designates? Thank you and enjoy.

Re: Spitzy .045 Engine
I believe the #6 didn't mean anything in particular. It was just a marketing thing. I don't think there was any variation/modifications between the different models, except that some had a large tank and some small. These are sometimes referred to as a "senior" and "junior", but weren't official Anderson names AFAIK.
Still waiting to get mine together so I can see if it'll run. Got an after-market spray bar & needle off Bob a while back, but I havent been game to press it in yet. Holes in the case don't seem to match bar diameter quite right, so I need to think it through.

Thank you. If I may ask, how does one get the spraybar out of this little engine. I believe that it did get unplugged/cleaned well while crock potting, and do not particularily want to take it out, but if it doesn't run good, I will have to remove it for a cleaning and that is something I have not yet done on a little engine. If it is simply pressed in, in which direction does one press it out and in from? Thank you.

Re: Spitzy .045 Engine
Yes the bar presses in one way only. That's the problem. One end is larger than the other but I don't know which. I will try to measure mine, although it's not an original. The problem I have is that one hole in the case is larger than the other, but if I insert the spray bar with the larger diameter in the large hole and the smaller diameter in the small hole, it's the wrong way around. I'm guessing someone pressed it out wrong last time, damaging the case. Pressing it in the correct direction will result in a loose fit one end. J B Weld to the rescue maybe.

Re: Spitzy .045 Engine
New don't take the spray bar OUT to clean it just remove the needle and spray some carb. cleaner through / block the other side your not spraying from and you will see the spray come through the spray hole { but will flood the engine bad if not held upside down!! I got some i need to (want too) run after a good cleaning

Re: Spitzy .045 Engine
Thanks for the tip on the carb cleaner. Now to just find me some here.... Although I do hear some noise now coming out of it when the needle is turned out a few turns. I am just hoping I can get her running and if so, I do believe that it will clean itself out better too. Thanks again.

Re: Spitzy .045 Engine
Ok. Just a quick little update yet again. Went to see my dad as he said he had carb cleaner. Well, a few minutes later and no carb cleaner I was thinking. I put a small piece of hose on the fuel nipple, backed out th eneedle a few turns and gave it a slight blast of air with a fine point blowgun. Well, it's clean! Now just to wait for a nicer day when I can open the garage door and run up some fun! Plus I have to wait for this stupid weather to cooperate. Supposed to be daytime highs of 23 F and nighttime lows of 1 F.

Re: Spitzy .045 Engine
Cool li'l project, When Mel Anderson came out with the larger tank version of the Spitzy .045 in '51 they were known as 'Senior' to differentiate from the small tank 'Junior' Spitzy, c.'50. But I think Roddie's correct, none of the ads or boxes are marked as Senior or Junior.
The #6 stamp was to give the other, larger manufactures the appearance that Anderson had at least seven dies, but i think they only had a couple. Anderson's engines are pretty cool. they also made balsa RTF's and ARF's. Tripacer, Crop Dust'r, F45/F65

Re: Spitzy .045 Engine
Wow Mark. Those are some interesting models there. I had heard the name Spitzy before getting this little guy, had never thought I would own one, but never knew they had models also. For now, I am just going to bench run the engine and in the future, may build it an airframe. Now to see if there is some good Spitzy reading online. More so to help more identify if this is the larger or smaller fuEl tank, and possibly narrow down year of manufacturing. Thank you.

Re: Spitzy .045 Engine
I think your picture shows the longer tank version, making it a "Senior", which I think is confirmed by the #6.
The short tank only comes forward to the front of the crankcase but the long tank comes right out in line with the prop driver. Probably meant that the small one was good for free flight and the larger one for control line.

Re: Spitzy .045 Engine
I have several of these and some of it's look-a likes, the Baby Spitfire.
I remember running one, and was amazed for some reason that it started and ran well. The three pictured are numbered 6, 7, and 9.
I see no physical difference between the larger tanked 7 & 9. The short tank version (W/flywheel) is #6.

The numbers on tanks are just crankcase pressure cast mold cavity numbers. Anderson produced by far the cleanest and best looking pressure cast crankcases of any mass produced 1/2 A engine made IMHO.

Re: Spitzy .045 Engine
Rod, the picture does not show it from the side, but mine extends just past the front of the crankcase, not as far as the prop driver as in th epicture posted by Bob. So, one part of the mystery is now solved! Part two, running this little devil....

Cool. Very interesting to know. I will have to admit that the crankcase does indeed look very clean and uniform. I do wish I had spent some more time cleaning it up, but hey, it isn't going to be shown, it will be run, and will get dirty again. But maybe one day it will get a very thurough cleaning/polishing.

Re: Spitzy .045 Engine
Good stuff Mark, I saved both pages.
I got a kick out of the short tanked Spitzy stamped U-228, reminded me of a WW2 German submarine. Wonder how they came up with that number.
BTW...The .010/.020 fuel line that Bernie sells works great to replace missing/bad Spitzy fuel lines. Anything else falls off the nipples or isn't a tight fit.

Bear in mind that LeRoy Cox used the top end of this engine for his first engine, so it can't be too bad.

Re: Spitzy .045 Engine
I have a few if these but all have the bottom tank part sawed off the engine. Either they had fuel delivery issue or didn’t fit in the model.

Spitzy .045 sawed off tank
More likely for F/F to reduce weight and use eyedropper fuel tank set up.
