My Second green Wen Mac Aracobra

My Second green Wen Mac Aracobra
I've blabbed here before about my 'imprinted-like-a-baby-duck' syndrome where Wen Mac Aracobras are concerned, having gotten one for Christmas when I was 6 years old. I know: They're a slab of plastic, and an insult to all things that actually fly...but the heart wants what the heart wants, and when I was 6, I wanted armament! The Aracobra had guns all over it, AND MISSILES !!, so that easily trumped mere fly-ability.
I scored one on Ebay several years ago, flying it several times in the front yard (imagine a cement truck with wings the size of a Starfighter). It is nice, but missing many of the parts and accessories necessary to get me all the way to Nirvana.
I watched this one for a while, then said, 'What the heck' and bought it. It came CAREFULLY packed, with it's original box (pretty good surge of Nirvana right there), including two missiles, a flying handle with line spacing appropriate for a combat wing, and the 'Cannon Prop Nut' that I missed so badly on my other Cobra.
It's also got all of it's guns, instruction sheet, and landing gear strut covers, so I'm feeling pretty good about the deal.
BACK TO THE 60'S !!!!!
I guess I need to try reading that Wen Mac Engine Sheet again, because all this 'Mk-' business just confuses the daylights out of me. The Mk-III that came with the Cobra, and the Mk-III that Phil's rebuilding look to be two different dogs...even the cases. I'm admittedly ignorant about casting processes, so maybe this could be changed or whatever down the line.

Thats a nice model, Wen Mac made some nicely detailed models. Nice to have all the little parts to dress it up!

That is NICE !! With all the guns and rocket/missiles i can see where it didn't matter if it flew or not at the time when 6 . And fire missiles is extra cool , hope you can get what is not there to complete the model .

Kim, your plane has a mk III in it. The other engine picture is a mk XIII (13). People confuse them all the time. I believe the engine you have sent me is a mkXIII. That mkXIII makes about 60% more power than the mkIII does.
If you get around to it could you post a pic of the other side of the mkIII from your plane? I want to see the markings on the other side.

Well crap...sorry if I messed up. Here's the Aracobra's engine:
I'll recheck the junkyard for a real one.

No biggie, I just wanted to see if Kims engine has the V on the other side like Roddies does.

Here we go. The Aracobra's engine DOES have a 'V' on it's right side:
I do have this for-sure Mk III with no 'V' if you can use it though:

Apologies to Kim
Damit, I’m sorry Kim I just gave you a “red”. Blame it on dumb fingers. Just recently updated this iPad and it’s a bit more sensitive to finger movements and I was scrolling to get back to the top of the post and Wham...I gave ya a red. Bummer, sorry.

Kim, yeah I have been looking for a mkIII with no V on it for a project. I want to fit a newer style cylinder to it and fake a missing link engine. I thought I had one but I was wrong, as usual.

Re: My Second green Wen Mac Aracobra
Congratulations on your purchase of a complete Airacobra, probably my favorite "plastic" model.
A year or two ago I bought several, most in various states of disrepair. The tabs on the cowling are it's Achilles heel as you know and finding one with an intact cowl is a challenge. Included a couple of pictures of my favorites.
Ok, more than a couple....and most have been seen here before anyway.

Well, I'm thinking you got one now...but look at these photos to make sure. On a good day, I can be fairly dense, but it looks like I'm pushing back new frontiers...
This sucker is bagged and ready for the road...if I can find my way to the Post Office Monday.

Re: My Second green Wen Mac Aracobra
I pulled the engine out of my Day Fighter a while ago. I thought it was stored with the plane but it's not. Now I've gotta figure out where the original engine is and which one. I think I have a couple of MkIIIs in my stash. I just hope I've left the steel disc which holds the spinner on the engine. That will tell me for sure. Did they definitely have a MkIII or can it possibly be something else?
I may have to try the Brasso trick. The white plastic is stained very yellow. It's all intact except for the missing canopy & pilot. Engine cowl and fuel tank nipples seem ok, but I'd expect they a really brittle. Mine has the enclosed bellcrank. I've seen others which don't have a belly pan covering it.
Rod.

Kim is the page above in your magazine collection. If true, I would be interested in the Big Iron article
I have a Berryman Big Iron kit...a combat plane that Marvin Denny flew a lot of. I also have a set of signed planes... having the published build article to put in the display would be nice

Hey Fred, Yeah I got the complete magazine--American Modeler July/August 1963. I'll check it through when I get home. If not in this one, I have several others of that era, and will search them too.
Later !!
