Re: How's the weather?
Hi gg,
Canada went metric 50yrs ago. I still think in ft/lbs/F !
Hope everyone is surviving the measured 'hottest world yet'...
Been hot humid here. Warm 'muggy' nights. Pop up thunderstorms.
Couple nights ago, had a nice clean NW breeze ~14C. I opened up all windows and set up a box fan to exchange the air in the house. 3-7AM. Worked out really well. Dropped the indoor temps 3C below the 24C thermostat setting.
I used the elec'turbo'yard blower on the garage, noisier, but very effective...
Back to the SW hot humid breezes now. Tomato plants here are confused.
On the SMALL flying:
-June21st, I got my 'earliest flight'...5:21AM. The 2ft elec Buzzard at the local school.
-the latent thermal breezes prevented an attempt at my 9:47PM record. (got a 9:30 though... )
My flying buddies are waiting for 'whatever' new drone rules apply here. A darn frigging Shame.
40yrs ago, I was foredeck/chute flyer on a 33ft racing sailboat.
Now, I can watch this in real time. The Lake Ontario300:
Hope this link works:
https://cf.yb.tl/lo30023#
Trying to go fast in light-zero wind is the hardest, especially downwind. I got that t-shirt.
Full scale soaring, is just too far away, for me.
I am looking into Pigeon Racing. Local guy, done it for decades....
A 'weird' type of Free Flight? Don't know.
Only one way to find out...
Take care,
Have fun,
Dave

Re: How's the weather?
Well, at least your weather east of me is better than ours. Just got back to reality from holidays. While it was nice being away, I am also glad to being back. Weather was honestly crappy for July. Felt more like late fall weather. Rain on and off for the first half of holidays, followed by 2 days of decent weather. Then it ended off with rain on and off again, even all the way home. Oh, did I forget to mention the wind? No, not just a light little breeze, but strong winds daily, morning till evening. Winds died down right when the swarms of bloodsuckers decide to come out....... Hitting nighttime lows between 47 and 50. I enjoyed the sleep with windows open then though.
Then today get back home to unpack and catch up on yardwork. Yep, monsoon on and off throughout the day.... I know what I will be doing tomorrow now.
Glad to be able to vent a bit.

So far, rainfall total for the past 24 hours is 7.0 inches and it's still raining. New record; last record rainfall was in late 60's.

It made the evening news Andrew. I hope that you live on high ground.
We are just a couple of hundred miles or so East of you and we fight for every drop that we can get.

Re: How's the weather?
Had a full day of ground-slapping lightning yesterday. Seems Mother Nature wasn't wasting any electrons having the clouds take swipes at each other, with all of her rage going straight to Mother Earth.
The shotgun blasts of thunder had me unplugging everything, and laying low (as low as you can lay on a hill) 'till the mortar rounds ceased. Luckily, none of the 0's & 1's were smoked out of my hard drives.
Trying to cut through the country road I use to go to lunch, and found a low spot there that could have made for some reasonable white-water rafting...if only for the moment. A hard 180 took me back the long way, so me and this little fishing cork I drive didn't end up on the evening news.
Got some more now, though not nearly as enthusiastic...just hope there's not a sniper hiding among the artillery...

Re: How's the weather?
Hi Kim,
My uncle Ron took us 6yr old kids out for a nature walk...
Distant rolling thunder, "What's that?" , we wondered....
No big deal he said, " It is God bowling in the clouds ", lets go back to the car...
We got soaked,
To this day,
I hear that distant rolling thunder,
And think,
"Will he get a strike, or a spare..?."
Good, not too hot weather here. Yet.
Hope everyone is good.
Take care,
Have fun,
Dave

Re: How's the weather?
Hi All,
Pop up slow moving thunderstorms here last few days. Kind of cool (pun) how they work.
They melt when the sun goes down. Form when it comes up.
So, the rain that came down today, rained 100kms west of here yesterday...
1in/25mm rain in 20minutes. Gutters overflowed... A few cracks of thunder....
Then it is dead calm.
So I topped up the electrons, and took the 2ft/7oz semi scale Buzzard Bombshell to the schoolyard.
The hot pavement had dried, humid, but much cooler than before.
Launched from my usual early morning no thermal spot... Set the timer for 20min...
WOW ! It went up, up, up....
I was admiring the sun on the clear yellow covering against the passing clouds,
THEN, I put it in a spiral dive, it was going way up, way too fast...
No kidding, I spent 15min in a very tight spiral dive, just to get it back !
It was cool...
Hope your weather weather is good where you are...
Take care,
Have fun,
Dave

Nice, Dave, you caught a hat sucking thermal. Have to be careful. I wouldn't want that mini Buzzard floating into my backyard (although I'd mail to back to you, be another CEF Engine of the Month potential winner with a story to top @Kim 's.)

Re: How's the weather?
Hi gg,
Before CL and RC,
I learned FF, rubber, towline gliders, etc... ( best was a chuck glider, loosing it on a test flight, )
The best ones, flew over Lake Ontario...never to be seen again...
Same type of thermals...
No kidding,
I am lucky to get this puppy back...
Most people here, run air-conditioners...
I doubt they would notice,
Me, running a Cox.049...
And wondering, where my FF went !
Over Lake Ontario?
Just a story from here...
Take care,
Have fun,
Dave

Re: How's the weather?
Well, I started this thread just under eight years ago on the eve of a predicted 103ºF day. Well, I woke this morning to a -2ºC frost.
Now I know a lot of you guys would think that a -2ºC morning was nothing unusual, but I gotta say, in these parts that's about as cold as it gets, and then only a couple of times a year. The positive is that it was followed up by a comfy sunny 15ºC day. Different story for this Friday. 11ºC forecast maximum and rain all day. Plus where I'll be workimg the power is scheduled to be off. Hopefully the rain delays their line works.

Re: How's the weather?
Hi Oldenginerod,
My Grandad explained 'Frost' to me.
Said it was 'Solid Dew'
Here in Canada,
If you add up the area of burnt forest for the last 40 yrs...
It was less than this year, so far.
YellowKnife is getting evacuated, capitol of our North West Territories.
And,
I wish the rest of the World well.
Take care,
Have fun,
Dave

Re: How's the weather?
Hi All,
I got to see the 'Blue Super Moon' moon rise today. (eve)
Over Lake Ontario, Canada.
Beetroot, Orange, then Lemon...
Overhead, it has an actual 'blueish tinge'...
Closest the moon gets here.
Weird Summer here.
Hope your weather is good.
Take care,
Have fun,
Dave

Yep, the Blue Moon certainly looked big, and yes, we got it over here as well. No evidence of a "blueish tinge" though.
Not sure there were too many worrying about the moon in Florida
They got hammered. Our hearts go out to eveyone who have suffered through this crazy season. Hurricanes, fires, floods

Re: How's the weather?
Hi Dave. Saw the moon last couple nights. Very bright but did not notice any colours. Had beets for dinner, and our moon was over Lake Erie. Still fixing/replacing the water heater from the flooding a week ago. The backup sump pump failed.

Re: How's the weather?
Hi aspeed, Oldenginerod,
"Once in a Blue Moon" is not that rare...
Just the second full moon in a month. I do not know why it is called 'Blue'...?
Good luck with the sump problem.
The slow moving 'Downpours' really test drainage systems.
I think the JetStream is off kilter some how.
I like beets, cooking up local Red Shepherd peppers and freezing a winters worth.
On night shift,
Upcoming week of Heat/Humidity here...
Take care,
Have fun,
Dave

10:30 PM, 79°, 93% humidity.
Small town life, evening of Labor Day. Drove 8 blocks down main street, passed 1 car, never saw a vehicle in the rear view.

Hi andrew,
Nice wordsmithing !
Here is my ' rear view mirror ' joke:
-Passenger: "Slow Down! "
-Driver: " Why? "
-P: " It is foggy, you might hit something..."
-D: " Slow Down, and have some damn fool run run into us ? "
Fun fact,
I heard the joke at a Q500 race...
Take care,
Have fun,

Re: How's the weather?
Crazy, crazy, crazy!!.
Two days ago we had an unseasonal 30º C. Down the road from us were a couple of pretty nasty bushfires. Really styrong winds caused significant evacuations of several towns. Thousands of acres burned but fortunately only one dwelling lost.
Then, 24 hours later, a cool change. Yesterday and today barely reached 10º C and constant heavy rain. We're talking 9-10 inches of rain in 48 hours. Now, the towns that were evacuated because of fire have been evacuated because of flash flooding. There's snow on the hills. How would you be??
