Sopwith Camel .049
Hello! New to the forum. I'm refurbishing a Sopwith Camel (Early Bird .049) and was hoping some kind soul could post a scan of the instructions/manual -or- point me in the right direction.
Thank you!
Thank you!

welcome to the forum! Lots of great information here and lots of knowledgable people. First thing I found was this: https://5dbfd882-a-62cb3a1a-s-sites.googlegroups.com/site/coxengineforumfiles/Sopwith%20Camel.pdf?attachauth=ANoY7crWTvb9xGeD5IAOm-VNLurMnVuulLQGXXW_2FNVyCalFNbBR_vf3sLpBVlv5HSzBDC0Jy-eHWI9SXH6sS-u1loK7iRdUywF2kJY62hsJ-S8l5AFIaTc1TVFXHYI_fUMqbQPthqeJncIzVlz9QOWEC4O-swCxH-yCKsq8Fxg9kTX5yITrEdeegspKe-n-xHdGKI7hSlKqE7nqTmWiwg7uBv0eVNUzDxyaC63ehDM7PpnyJPn_Po%3D&attredirects=0
May be quicker to to the instruction sheets on the left hand side of this page, click on it and scroll down to sop with camel. It's a parts listing, not the manual.

Re: Sopwith Camel .049
David,
Do you run it? Silly question...but where the heck does the fuel go? I checked the plug (and it lights). Is there something else I should be looking for as an indication the engine won't start?
Thank you,
Ed

Thank you,
Look down through the top wing where there are 2 cut outs in the center, you will see the fuel filler pipe and the over flow pipe will be just before it.On my plane they are molded in yellow plastic. My Sopwith Camel is NOS in the box and it is too nice to run....But if I find another one in used condition I will run it. Is your motor free? Or does it feel sluggish when turning it over? You may have gummed up fuel in it and you may need to disassemble the motor and reed assb. Also the glow plugs get weak if it has been run a lot and may need replacing. If you look on the left side of the forum's web page, under information you will find the parts page for your plane. It's helpful if you are going to take your plane apart.

Ed: First download the parts layout as someone else mentioned from the "Instruction sheets" to the left and below "LATEST TOPICS". Then look at this picture of the Camel from above.
Fuel nipples should be in area shown inside fuselage.

Re: Sopwith Camel .049
This is GREAT! Thank you! And THANKS for posting all the great pictures. I was able to disassemble (and pretty cleanly). The engine is in very good shape (not sure it's even been run before and see/smell no traces of spent fuel).

Re: Sopwith Camel .049
This was my 1st Cox model. It was somewhere around 1972.. I would have been 12 years old. I don't have it anymore. You can get spare props from Cox International.

I'm pretty sure that these are the decals

Re: Sopwith Camel .049
Thank you. I'll post a picture. The sop is in pretty good shape. It's missing the bellcrank and bellcrank retainer (it has the wire). One of the struts is missing its end. It still has the original decals and wood (camo) props.

Re: Sopwith Camel .049
Maaaannn, you collectors are starting to get to me. I do love that prop too.
I know I could Google this but I don't wanna. I'd rather ask people than Skynet: Is the Camel the plane that Eddie Rickenbacker flew?
Thanks for humoring me.
Rusty

While he may have flown other types (can't find my crusty, non-internet connected little book), Rickenbacker is most associated with the French-Built Spad. This one is parked in the US Air Force Museum.

Re: Sopwith Camel .049
Hey Rusty, thank for reminding me of that song. I loved it when I was a lad. Big Snoopy fan at the time. The really frustrating thing at that time was that when it was played on the radio they had to BLEEP out the word "bloody". While in context it refers to blood thirsty or covered in blood, but in Australia it's a common adjectival swear word, which back then wouldn't have been allowed in the media. Not like these days where they edit the word out of the mix (if they even bother)- back then they literally added a loud bleep which was really distracting.RknRusty wrote:Haha, now that's an important bit of history.KariFS wrote:RknRusty wrote:Is the Camel the plane that Eddie Rickenbacker flew?

As a kid I recall attending an airshow where they had a flying model of Snoopy's dog house. I wanted it!
A bit like this one. I think it's been done a few times.
Rod.
