Cox Engine of The Month
Spacebug Racing Carburetor

Spacebug Racing Carburetor
Does anyone have a picture of a Spacebug Racing Carburetor? I am trying to determine what that is exactly. I looked up the parts list online and it did not show a picture of it, however, the engine guide listed a Racing combination: Special Carburetor and head for $3.50 (which was a lot of money back then). I imagine the special carburetor allowed more air, but I was wondering if anyone knew what it was. Thanks, Andy

Re: Spacebug Racing Carburetor
If you are talking Space bug SR. they did have an upgrate on the air intake was enlarged for better performance I read it some where but don't recall at this time ((((( the only carburation they have is needle and air restriction and of course fuel intake . I will look for that article ... Eric couldn't find it but http://www.mh-aerotools.de/airfoils/cox_earlyengines.htm

Marks .049 Collectors Group has some photos of a "Hop Up Kit" for the Space bug. I'm sure he could provide info about it.

Thanks for the picture. I guess it needs a special tank to work with the Racing Head. I wonder how you can tell if the tank has the racing carburetor? Andy

Re: Spacebug Racing Carburetor
All it is is a high comp head and an enlarged venturi.
It's something you can do on your own, problem is once it's done it's not reversable.

Re: Spacebug Racing Carburetor
The "Hop-up kit" picture, is one i bought from Mud, hopefully he'll post something, as he know more about it than anybody.
Here's what i know and what i think i know:
-They were made 1953 for only one year, this is where you can realistically say its pretty rare.
-The glow head was a special high compression version, which i think was what the very first versions used was and was quickly changed (lower compression) to make them more user friendly.
-The air tube on the tank is slightly larger inside diameter then the first version, this soon became standard the following year?
-This is ture of the venturi as well. first couple(?) years it was the acorn style.
I'm speculating that Cox had a bunch of the first run hicomp heads left over and right before they introduced the new tank and horn type venturi, they sold them as the hop up kit.
