Spacebug-Style Crankshaft Repair
So last week I won this dead Thermal Hopper.
http://bit.ly/1fuMONt
It suffered from the all too common broken off threads on the crank. I wanted to bring it back to life.
Most would assume just replace the crank, but those are a rare commodity on their own. So I hatched a new plan. I had a small threaded rod I got from another engine that was the proper thread. So what now? Weld it. I clamped the rod and the crank(wrapped in electrical tape to protect the bearings) and put a small gap to assure good penetration and a couple zaps with a mig welder. Then I used a file to carefully true up the weld and make it more uniform.
Here's the results.
You care barely tell.
It's not perfect or beautiful, but it'll work.
Also ignore the incorrect head/cylinder. Just what it came with. But it's great to see it in one piece again!
So if you've got a broken one, don't fret. It can be saved!

It's great to see it back in one piece. Not sure if you ever plan on running it, but if you do wear glasses!

I don't think it'll break. Atleast there. I tried to purposely break it by bending and couldn't. But I will use caution regardless!

Re: Spacebug-Style Crankshaft Repair
I admire the ingenuity and determination to bring one of my favourite engines back to life.
If your approach doesn't work then is is a relatively quick job to bore out the crankcase, shorten it and fit a bog standard cox crankshaft. I have done this a few times now.

See the problem with this hopper is it has the Oilite(?) bronze bushing. Although to wouldn't call it a problem as I've been looking for an example of this.

Re: Spacebug-Style Crankshaft Repair
Some have bearings and some don't.
Here are four - two do and two don't.
The middle two do the outer two don't.
These are all original and not bored out. (But will be!)

Ian,
Great job shortening the snout on that Thermal. It looks factory made.

Did you have an assembly? Or is that something new?

Me either.
I think it's a FF thing. You adjust the needles for different types of fuel and then you just switch the fuel feed line when you change fuel.
That's my best guess....

Re: Spacebug-Style Crankshaft Repair
Dual needles were for throttle. You would set one for high rpms, the other rich to slow the engine down for low speed when both needles were in use.

Re: Spacebug-Style Crankshaft Repair
From my understanding, it was designed for radio control. Atleast that's what the package says. But can be utilized in control line and free flight. Something will release a soft line for the second needle effectively richening the mixture. That something is whatever you design or use to make it happen. It's a primitive throttle. Alternatively, I've heard of them just being ran with the dual needle and one Y-ed line.

Re: Spacebug-Style Crankshaft Repair
That is a neat way to repair it. I have one where the threads are broken off. I can save the knurled part and cut off the broken shaft from there.

If the end of the crank is bent not broken:
Excellent repair!
I have not tried repairing a broken crank but have a few that I will have to make an attempt at.
I have straightened out a few that were bent.
Several years ago I started a thread showing how on the MECOA model engine forum.
Pulled it up and found the photos were not working so fixed that and now the
post has photos again. Here is a link for anyone interested:
