Glowhead durability
Hi, quick and simple, how long will a 049 glowhead last in average ?
I just got about 1.5l of fuel through my engine and i fly it very often so i wonder, if i should buy stock or plan on turning the head into a plug adapter, when it is burned out.
The fuel is a custom mix of 18% castor and 15% nitro.
Cheers Georg(e)

Re: Glowhead durability
Since I was 12(43 years ago) I've only blown 3 plugs. Two of those were this summer on the same day when I wasn't using enough head gaskets for the fuel I was using in my Black Widows. So it's a rare event to pop one. I do have one that doesn't get very red when the battery is connected but it still works.
But as for your question, a head adapter is a good way to go. Some will lower your compression, so ask questions about whichever you are thinking about buying.

Re: Glowhead durability
I don't recall ever "blowing a head" but I have had them burn out but only very rarely in many years of modeling.
I like head adapters for installing specialized "glo's" but like OEM replacement glo heads for general useage. I have a whole bunch of OEM's NIP.
Were it not for them I'd go the head adapter route.

I like the idea of conversion heads because i like using an RC car style glow start.

Don't know about .049 heads, but I've had two Pee Wee heads burn out in less than a week! and the second one was brand new from Bernie (and, before you ask, I wasn't putting 12v through them!)

You sure you aren't running them too lean?
Unfortunately I wasn't running at all! I was having trouble getting the engine to start, and the heads stopped working while I was still trying. Odd thing is, both heads' coils LOOK ok, usually I've found that a burnout melts the platinum coil, or at least you can see that it's damaged, these look ok, just won't work. I know the voltage/amperage is ok because it starts all my other engines without problems, unless of course, the tiny Pee Wee head is more sensitive.
And of course, you can guarantee it'll be the most expensive heads that pop off!

For the benefit of my international readers( and possible some Brits)...."The Black Country" is an area in the English Midlands bordered by Birmingham, Dudley & Wolverhampton, which used to be the centre of British industry, heavy engineering factories produced lots of smoke & dirt, hence "Black" Country!
I was born 6 miles from Birmingham, although not strictly within the Black Country, hence my knowledge of the expressions!

Dave, he means the black country as in the old heart of British industry that was demolished by the iron lady

Could that bigger hammer be the one mentioned in the saying "Beat it to fit. Paint it to match."?Ivanhoe wrote:SuperDave wrote:Excretia occurs.

Sounds like it could be the same grade of precision engineering, where I come from a hammer is refered to as a "Birmingham screwdriver"!

Yes, the Brits are absolute masters in using idioms! Very amusing they are.
"This is sticky wicket" for example.

Yep but only usually happens to propel after a few pints of fullers "londons pride"
Re: Glowhead durability
Over here, we "provinicials" would put a different meaning to "The Black Country" and it would have racial overtones.

Wilf:
Here we are belabored with a "politically correct" element what will immediately assume the wrong conclusion i.e. "Black Country". "Black" being the trigger word.
