Hi Matt, didn't see you sneak in.
Welcome to the forum.
Lots of cylinder info here.

Scroll down, last photo on the right is a "thin wall".

Re: What is a thin cylinder wall?
Thinner style cylinders can be found on engines made before the 1970s. They can run much cooler due to their thin walls. But can be damaged more easily when removing/replacing or in a crash.
I JUST SAW THIS. I am looking at a tatone muffler that is for a thin walled. Should I assume that muffler will only fit pre 1970's ?

Re: What is a thin cylinder wall?
Thin wall vs. standard thicker cylinder. Left cylinder is off a 1978 Babe Bee and the one on the right (the thin one) is off a 1962 Babe Bee. The reason there are thin, stepped and thick cylinders mostly comes down to the honing machines at the factory. Their older machines required the lip on the base of the cylinder to hold it in the machine. In 1972, Cox had a new honing machine made that didn't require the lip at the base. When they came out with exhaust throttles in 1969, the throttle needed the cylinder to be thicker to support it yet the honing machine still required a the lip so they came up with the stepped cylinders. With the new honing machine in use, they could save money and skip a step in the cylinder making process so by the mid 70s, all .049 and .051 cylinders were of the thick type.

Wow OK a significant amount of knowledge. Thank you. Matt
