Control line Stunt Heaven!

Control line Stunt Heaven!
Boy it was beautiful today. We got there early in case we had to mow, but it was already done by Happy Gilmore, our club's faithful maintenance member. The wind was rock steady about 8-10 MPH with stunts off to the side of our beloved life-giving star.
The Ukey was all fixed up... again this time with a new elevator and control horn. I spent so much time on it, I never got around to making the external plumbing on the Oriental look professional. It has a goofy looking overflow vent poking out the side, but it works fine. And my feared fuel problem was non existent. Last time I had switched to Sig 10/20 and it had a scary lean run. Thank goodnes it's an ABN engine, so no damage. I spiked the fuel with 2% castor since my usual Powermaster is 10/22. It ran beautifully with a minor change in the needle. I must have just ingested some weed seed on the rollout on that awful flight last week. I love this FP40, it almost sounds like a high buck piped engine, it mildly 4-2s like I've never had one before almost all the way up to the end where the horsepower maneuvers are. It turns on going up and turns off coming down. Somewhere between 5.1-5.4 second laps. The engine run time today was about 5-1/2 minutes.
I put up several flights on the Ukey and I'm pretty sure it will serve me well in Saturday's Profile event. I got the imaginary pattern points on most of my flights, and Finally made a 40 point landing. At least that's what I awarded myself. I'm getting better at that. I flew the Oriental conservatively and aborted the second half of the Vertical 8 and one other, maybe the outside square. When I abort the overheads it's usually because I don't cheat far enough behind myself on top, so I don't feel comfortable continuing through the exit. I'm pretty sure I won't do that in the contest. Surprisingly enough the Horizontal Square 8 is my most proficient maneuver now aside from round loops and the round H8.
The last two trips to the field have ended with me feeling frustrated. I hate that. But we took it slow and I flew as well enough. I have flown better at times, but we had fun and finished up with that feeling in tact. So I'll go into this weekend feeling competent and trusting my equipment. Can't do any better than that. And two Saturdays later, we have the Bob Shaw first annual Stunt only contest on the last day of the Joe Nall at Triple Tree Aerodrome, and I'm really excited about that. Just a day trip. Drive up, less than 2 hours, fly and come home.
Wayne flew his Cardinal and Pathfinder today deciding which he'll fly in H'ville. He'll judge Saturday and I'll fly in profile that day. Then we'll both fly intermediate Sunday and team up pitting for each other. That's great since we have our routine down pat, and he can crank the Oriental for me. Something that's a problem after popping my bicep tendon last Summer. That rotating motion is the main thing that injury affects. The FP40 is a very easy engine to crank. Easy to flood, but Ken told me how to quickly un-flood it, and we got to try that procedure today. It really works. Thanks Ken. Wayne chose the Pathfinder with its Supertigre 45, a very sweet combo. And he flies it like it's locked onto rails. I predict first place for him. He's never won a stunt trophy since beginner and rarely gets to fly at contests.
So, unlike ever before, I have all my trimming done, I can fly my planes fairly well, and all of my equipment is pretty organized so I can relax the rest of the week. Go in fresh. Yeah!

Rusty, I love the Oriental decal. Nice work. I need to learn how to do that. Shawn would probably understand. Just remember, don't bail on a maneuver. If it looks anything like the maneuver it will be judged as that maneuver. A bail out loses your pattern points. Most of all relax and enjoy this plane is going to get it done for you. Ken

Hi Ken
Yeah I was being protective of it today. I know I fly it well and mainly wanted to confirm that my fuel was good and that I had the right amount... for here. I'll fly a practice flight in in Huntersville to get it metered there. I wish it held another half ounce, as 4oz is close. Over pavement eeeeeeerrr
I'll do my best to get the pattern points, that's my main goal. I did not understand the rule last year. I thought I had made an attempt when I bailed on the hourglass but now I know why it didn't count. The V8 is the hardest to exit or continue if I don't go high enough. If I have to, I will climb some before the exit or second bottom loop. Ugly is better than an abort. I did well in profile last year but blew the PP in both flights in Stunt on Sunday. I was so upset with myself, that's a big part of what led me to destroy my Copeland Skyray ar Watt's after the contest. I was pushing too hard trying to prove a point to myself. Sad but a good lesson to not get too wrapped up and emotional and just have fun. I was proud of my 417.5 in Saturday's profile though. I even beat some of the big guys due to their fuel metering mistakes. I cut off a lap after the clover, but whipped it to get the 2 laps. Best day ever for the Osprey.
Decals are easy but a pain in the ass too sometimes. I like the dragon on my tail the best. Found it on Google. The wing lettering is Microsoft Wordart with the color gradient, but that doesn't show up much on camera. Maybe you'll get to see it in real life in October.
I'll do my best to make sure my next flight report is a good one.
And thanks, Roddie, I'm glad you're watching and reading my Ups and Downs.

Re: Control line Stunt Heaven!
Best of luck to you Rusty!
Sounds like you are ready to go and past the mental battle.
Funny how different stunts affect different people. I find the vertical 8 to be not so bad, I usually start a 45 or higher which gives me plenty of room to mess with on the down leg.
The second loop is almost dead overhead center of the circle. I have never been judged on it though so can't say if I do it right or not. I do know I have a tendancy to flatten my bottoms. I learned that one with the clunky old Ringmaster so when I did it with the Cardinal it looked a lot better.
At any rate there are maneuvers that you do that I haven't even attempted such as the Clover and square 8. I still struggle withe the square loop!
Anyway, blah, blah, I need to practice!
You are going to do great! Don't be concerned about the concrete. A wreck is a wreck while being judged. Besides, nothing is going to happen anyway.

Re: Control line Stunt Heaven!
Thanks for the encouragement, Ron.
Funny, over a couple of weeks I've gone from dreading the outside square loop to doing it pretty well but still bobbling my inside square bottom, which makes no sense. And when I first started doing the V8 I could do it better than I do now sometimes. The clover is not nearly as hard as it looks, though mine is probably out of shape. It's hard to tell from the pilot view sometimes.. I always think my hourglass stinks and then Wayne tells me, Nice HG. One thing I need to watch is where the ground is. I'm told I did a 1 foot low pass on an inside loop yesterday with the Oriental, and I have no recollection of it. That's where I've been completely surprised when I hit the ground in my not so distant past. I still need to look at the big picture more than the plane.

Re: Control line Stunt Heaven!
Thanks for the good wishes, Eric.
I'm up against stiffer competition than ever before, so my easy trophy days might've hit the wall already. If I get the pattern points, I'll consider it a win. Beating my last October's score would count for that too.
You know I'll let you know, no matter what happens.
