Cox J3 Cub
Howdy,
I found a J3 cub in my local hobby shops attic and it's missing a rudder. It was never flown but I think it was the display airplane from the window. This is it, anyone have a copy of how the rudder should look? Like perhaps scan it and I can make a new one out of 1/16ply?

No not really. Something on the rudder keeps tail from flopping about. No idea what the orig Cox part looks like.

It looks like a similar hinge as a PT-19. That's just from what I can see of numbers 2 and 4 of Ian's pictures. Only this one isn't rubber banded on like the PT's is.

I don't have a PT to look at. I'm not sure what holds rudder in place and think I see part of a bearing in photo 4. Wish someone had parts for sale or scan of parts list with photos.

Hey Brenda,
My buddie, Patrick has one of these Cubs. It's on my project list to fashion some sort of landing gear for it, though leaving it off works best for front yard flying with grass landings.
It's a good flyer, with a pretty nice dead-stick glide.
Hope these help.

Kim those are perfect. Even with a scale!! Now I can try to make one. Looks like it only has a few deg of right rudder. I think the hook looking thing in the back is for a rubber band? I've never worked with styrene is it like balsa to work with? I.E, can you sand it to shape?
Once again thank you so much! Shouldn't take me to long to mill out a suitable rudder and get it to fly. Not sure if I should give it to the scouts or CAP.

Re: Cox J3 Cub
Yeah, the notch is for some rubberbands that wrap around the hooks on the lower fuselage, and lock it forward.
I've never worked with making plastic parts, but HAVE made PT-19 rudders from good quality ply that I petrified with CA. Wouldn't win any beauty contests, but they worked.
Looks like the main thing would be getting that elevator hinge-tube securely attached to it.
Good luck!
P.S. You might try posting a "Want to Buy" for it. Never know when these things might turn up in somebody's spares box!!!

Re: Cox J3 Cub
Thanks again Kim,
I posted in WTB and perhaps I will get a nibble or something. I'll give it a week then I'll try to make one out of 1/16 ply as that's what I got laying about. I could make bearing thing out of semi-hard balsa and soak it in CA or dope. But then might have tail heavy Cub. I flew a full sized Super Cub back in the 1980's and it was sort of squirreley at high AOE and mid power. That is when I found out the little beggar could snap roll, smacked my head on side of plane. Only reason I didn't auger in was my CFI was in the plane with me.

Yeah, things can happen fast with power on...still, the Cubs and Champs are some of the friendlyest!

Brenda, 1/16 ply warps easily after painting. I'm thinking with your resourcefulness, you should be able to come up with a solution using sheet balsa for lightness reinforced with 1/16 ply in key areas for strength and durability.
You could try a prototype and test it. Then from lessons learned, make a better one. It doesn't have to mimic the original 100%, should look scale enough with a reasonable facsimile, yet sturdy enough to not flex or fail in flight.
