Energy.. don't waste it.

Energy.. don't waste it.
I'm being made to feel like I'm an ogre around my house.. but honestly; you wouldn't turn on the faucet without turning it back off when you're done .. right? So.. why would you leave a 45" LCD TV that uses 300w. on.. and leave the house? I live with people who do these kind of things REGULARLY... I'll come home to an empty house.. and find the TV on.. as well as every lamp in the house. I have found the oven/stove/elec. heaters left on a few times too.
I complain verbally... leave notes (no one likes my notes.. and they get removed soon after posting) What should I do about this? It's costly.. and in some cases dangerous. I should mention that the occupants of our household suffer from severe A.D.D. and are perpetual slobs too. "I" happen to suffer from O.C.D.. not a good combination. I don't like to imply that people are stupid.. but these things "are" just plain stupidity.
I don't watch much TV.. maybe I'll cut the plug off... but that would be stupid.

Are you related to these people? or are they room mates?
Perhaps you could have a sit down discussion with the offenders and plead your case. Maybe even show them mathematically how you could save.
People who live with ADHD/ADD have no excuse to not be responsible. They just have to try a little harder to pay attention.

I live with my wife and her 29 year old son. They're very sensitive (especially her..) to anything that might be construed as even "constructive" criticism. That's my issue... and this is a rant. I feel a little guilty of openly posting here... but sometimes I feel like they're thinking when I complain about appliances being left on.. and trash/clutter being left around the house to trip over. I am also at fault for handling things most times with a "passive-aggressive" approach... for example; I'll pick-up half a dozen beer-caps (trash).. empty soda bottles (trash).. torn-open wrappers (trash).. pairs of shoes, tags from new clothes.. that are just left around the house.. and put them in a pile.. in an obviously conspicuous area.
Thanks for the advice Ron.. I must tread lightly though..
I've already divulged TMI...... and my life could be in danger if my wife ever reads this.

I like the hotel key-card you use to get into a room.
When you're in, the card goes into a holder on the wall
that turns on the electricity to the room. When you leave,
you take the card, and that kills the power.
I don't know if that's common, but I've seen it in plenty
of hotels in India.

You could replace some of the light switches with vacancy sensors. You switch the light on manually but it turns off automatically when it no longer senses any movement of people. Are any of the receptacles split-wired (either the top or bottom of a duplex receptacle is controlled by a wall switch) in your house?

I was in a similar situation years ago with my wife and her son from the previous marriage. I realized I was never going to win any conflict with them even if in the right, so I had to bend instead of break. I know the rant helps. Bottom line the kid moved on and we are still married, 22 years now and it was worth it to bend.

Install "pay as you go" coin meters on high energy using devices that keep being left on. Say 50 cents a minute for the TV.

Starwood is in the process of installing them in their hotels.dckrsn wrote:I like the hotel key-card you use to get into a room.

Roddie,
When I was a kid my mom got [bleep] at me and my brother for watching to much tv on summer break and cut the cord off.
Ian,
I had an aunt who installed a coin box on the tv cord and started paying the kids in quarters for doing chores around the house.

Re: Energy.. don't waste it.
I use a couple of those motion sensor switches. They are nice. I have a walk-in closet for the laundry and it is nice to open the door and have lights! I have the sensors in a couple other less than accessible spaces, but not any main living areas.
I have had bad experiences with the lights going out due to these sensors in large spaces, mostly due to inappropriate use in classrooms in high school... I am not afraid of the dark, but a group of 20 teens suddenly in pitch dark is never good. (someone WILL panic)
