Is it just me....spam/scam/BS...and just plain waste of time
For years we had a land line... and we are pretty early adopters of the Cell phone magic...but late to the table with (now invaluable) Smart Phones
What we really enjoyed about the cell phone Vs the (we are in the book) Landline was the complete lack of scam/spam/sales calls...on the cell side
Of course ( and I do not know why) that all changed a fw years back...and it seems anyone can google my cell number and pester me... IMO The USA "do not call" registry is just a waste of time...but I still register both phones
Funny thing is, I pay attention, and usually am near a browser...Laptop--- or the smartphone itself
Too easy to type in a simple question...like:
" is this guy on the phone offering to reduce my Direct TV to $58 a month for the next two years...if I send him $300 advance payment...a scam or not?
Google first answer is---- it is a scam
So I set about to waste this 7/11, Achmed sounding, Bangladeshi butt hole's, time for the next 90 minutes trying desperately to get him to throw in many other free options
My o my! What absolute fun on another, rainy, dreary, stuck in the shop with too high humidity, day....
Jest sayin

I like it. We are one of the same! I like wasting their time as well. I have a few things I like to do. Ifvthey tell me they have a few questions, I tell them I do too. I let them start, answer theirs, then when they ask me the next one I stop. I then politely tell them to stop as it is now my turn. I usually try to sell them something. Most of the time they tell me it's not the way it works, but I remind them they called me and that the ball is in my court. Usually one or two and they tell me im wasting their time and hang up. Years ago with my landline I would simply put it down and come check on them every half hour cause then if you did not hang up it tied up their lines and they couldn't do anyting until you hung up. I've also let them check out what my stereo could do too! But the best, and I so want to do it is the following.

The list goes on. Asknthem for their number so you can call them when they're sleeping...

Tom Mabe, that's the guy...funny as heck!
My recent favorite is the "windows service technician " that calls telling me my computer is sending error messages. I try to follow their instructions to access my computer, but my screen is not showing what they're looking for. After a frustrating 15 to 20 minutes with them and their supervisor. I'll tell them I'm using a Apple computer!! CLICK. They hang up.
Here's a good example on how to deal with e-mail spammers:

Did someone give Fred a red negative Rep. for a reason, or was it an accident?

Maybe
rattled someone's cage, hence the negative score. Wasn't me mind you. I'm just as sick of them as the rest of you. The Aussie "Do not call" register sounds about as useful as yours. There are so many exemptions they just keep trying. I've reported the same company 3-4 times and it still keeps happening. When asked, they always claim to be calling from the company who's product they're pushing, which is wrong 'cos they work for a telemarketing company. Try & get the name of their actual employer. That's usually when they hang up.fredvon4 wrote:7/11, Achmed sounding, Bangladeshi butt hole

The red green things don't get my attention and I think Rod is probably right about my description hitting some nerve
I guess if there was some $10,000 a week for life or $10M annual prize for being the most popular on a forum I might curb my writing...

Chucked a 'compensating' greenie in there too. Always liked the encouragement of positive points, and seldom felt the need for the negatives, just skipping the threads or posts that were low.
And thought this one was a hoot anyway! Sorta parallels my tactic for dealing with my Jehovah Witness buddies!

I've always liked the "Red Green show" on PBS.
Nerve, smurve, we are all now in the "basket of deplorables" except Rod, Ian, Levin, and a few others. They get to sit back and watch the show. We should be able to express ourselves as badly as our future president has, without anyone calling FOUL! This is in the "Redneck zone" right??

Kind a curious about low post here on CEF but it's all good....Boo Hillary...Yea Trump
Wife and I are looking forward to next 4 years instead of dreading a Hillary win

It's certainly been interesting for an outsider. I know the results will have repercussions around the world, but we've had 'round the clock U.S. election on our TVs, which is really of little interest. Republican or Democrat means nothing to me. You guys have shown great restraint throughout the campaign. It's got the power to divide. Don't let it happen here please.
Rod.

Is ALL politics REALLY Local?
Hey Rod
I think NOT
Like it or not, we ARE a world economy
England's politics, America's, or Germany's, (and more important now) China's, or the ECU ---let alone Australia's politics and economy have much farther reaching implications, now more than ever
How about we, as a world...define trade with some (needed???) import duty that is rational and reasonable , yet lets folks like you and I ---exchange goods and services in a manner that actually PROMOTES the exchange rather than hinder it... all the while paying a reasonable fee to do so...
I still do not understand why a 1% fee to do internet business would be unacceptable---- IF the fee was to promote more trade and commerce and prevent bad actors...jest a side thought
I suspect D Trump has a similar mind thought on this
would truly love to chat with him on the subject

Hey New, tried one of your techinques today. Had a call from the Continent today asking for the "home owner". I simply said, "Hold on a moment", set the phone down (in my workshop) and went inside the house and made a cup of tea. After about 30-40 minutes I quietly hung up. Couldn't be bothered to see if he was still there.
Great idea, I like it.

Re: Is it just me....spam/scam/BS...and just plain waste of time
Messing with telemarketers is fun I admit, but I also try to remember that the poor schmuck in the other end of the line is just trying to make a living. Part of his/her work is of course to bother me, but as a courtesy to a fellow human being, nowadays I just politely tell "no thanks" and "goodbye". If the marketer just keeps on talking, I hang up.
Let me share an anecdote about one of my happy customer experiences over the phone in America. This was a while ago (in 1998) and I don't even remember what it was that I was trying to get done. Anyway, the snooty sounding customer service expert in the other end of the line asked me to spell my name. I start with "K", she interrupts me, saying, sir, "gay" is not a letter, it is a wooord. I try multiple times, doing my best "khay" or whatever it is supposed to sound, she keeps repeating this gay stuff. Finally I stand up at my desk (I was at the office), almost knock my chair over and growl "K as in Kentucky fried f***in Chicken, ". She got the "K" loud&clear now And also the rest of the letters of my name and address without any hiccups whatsoever. Not sure if she was messing with me at first or did she just not want to understand.
Another time, on the road, at a Burger King, this is not over the phone but face to face with the keen&eager Burger Artesan person across the counter. I wanted "some onion rings please" with my whopper or whatever, she goes "pardon me" like 6 times until she says "oh, onion rings, I thought you said onion riggs". I asked "what are they?", she didn't answer. But I did get my onion rings

RE: Is it just me?
If I see a number I don't recognize on the ID caller, I just answer in a loud tone "Warehouse !" and that does it for most calls. If they ask by my name I say "No one works here by that Name...Wrong number ". That is no lie since I don't work since I retired ..
I tell the telemarketer offering free trips to the Bahamas, that I can't afford anymore "free" stuff and give my share to the next guy on the call list..
The most hilarious thing happened a while back when a sub continent computer tech sales guy called our home and spoke to my wife 3 times in three days. I guess he got bold listening to the gentle female voice so on the third day he tried to get fresh and crossed the line with her. Poor dude inadvertently broke the glass case that says "Break only in case of an emergency" and flipped what the good ol' boys call the "Bitch Switch" !!! He got his first lesson in his third language by a ticked off and insulted women with a strong Southern accent !!!! She crushed any "Delusions of Adequacy" he thought he had like a heel of a combat boot on a raw egg !!!!
I laughed so hard I almost hurt myself !!!!!!!
