Thursday Felt Like Sunday

Thursday Felt Like Sunday
Making good use of my new-found Retirement Flexibility, I shot a call to my Uncle Wayne about having an impromptu flying day, and he agreed to pull himself away from his mid-week grass mowing for a little model airplane action!
Rather than loading up the Assault Van with a bunch of planes, I decided to focus on just a couple: My grossly over-powered Jetco Shark 15 (with it's ancient Enya .19) and the Veco/Dumas 'Scout' that Wayne built WAY back in 1968 or so.
Back in the 1990's, Wayne gave me the Scout, last flown in 1971 or so, and I did some work on restoring it then, but it eventually got stuck in my back-log of projects. I recently removed the odd-color blue Monokote from it's right wing, and matched up some new red film, along with replacing a couple parts, and installing a new firewall.
The winds had picked up by the time I got my table set up, but I wasn't gonna try anything fancy on these first couple of flights anyway...just round & round would be fine for this old stunter's first outing in 43 years.
The Cox "Golden Bee-of-Questionable-Lineage" cranked up nicely and hauled the little model off it's 'carrier deck' with authority. I stayed with my program and just enjoyed a sight I hadn't seen in a few decades. We tried once more before the winds just got too high, and then I returned the Scout to the safety of it's 'portable ramp'.
The Scout back in it's heyday, with my cousin Carol Ann and Aunt Jo.
The Scout was a little on the Rough Side when I got it back in the 90's.
Not sure WHAT I was thinking back then...
Uncle Wayne and the Scout he built in 1967-68.
The Scout...out on the end of it's Spiderwire.
The Shark rockets around a big inside loop. I nearly planted it...trying to do a vertical 8 with it on 52' lines.
Just not enough sky for that length of line and it's speed. So, it'll either get longer lines or a smaller engine (probably the former!) so that my thrilling maneuvers won't be QUITE so thrilling!
End of a good day---all the toys STILL in an assembled condition!
THEN..there was gunfire...but that's stuff for another thread!

Good stuff Kim!!!
I need to finish my Scout, the leadouts were torn off when I left the model too close to the bench grinder. Now I have to pull off the sheeting to fix it.
Hope you had a great time!!!

OUCH! Well THAT is original...my own preferred style is to DROP something on a plane!
Yeah...get that sucker restrung! I intend to head your way sometime this summer, and will be packing lots of balsa/plastic/metal and their related fluids!
Great Time Kim

Good stuff, thanks.
Glad the Shark survived the pullout. Remember on that vertical 8, the top loop goes All the way overhead and even a little further over the top and behind you is okay. Makes the bottom loop a lot less hairy. You probably know that already.

Yeah Rusty!
Any FURTHER back, and I'll be laying in the grass! I've been keeping it on 52' so that I could fly it at Wayne's House. He loves his trees and I don't blame him, but if we could cut down that one closest to where I'm standing, I could go out to 60' easy. He has even named it "The 'Bob' Tree", in honor of my other cousin Bob, who has been flying model airplanes since the early 1960's.
Much like Charlie Brown's Kite-Eating Tree, Bob's Tree and his aircraft have a strange attraction for one-another. Even with the wide-open approach from the west, Bob's planes will invariably approach too fast, prompting an emergency go-around...to which the tree objects...and wins out. Lots of carnage has occurred around that tree...
I MAY put a little more tail lead in the Shark...leaving off the gear really woke it up, but not sure how far I want to push that C.G.
I almost HAVE to leave the Enya .19 on it, as it is THE same engine we flew on Wayne's Shark back in the day.

Haha, The Bob Tree. You're right, it would be wrong to remove that one.

I've threatened to sell some stocks and buy an acre of that cornfield. Figure a cheap mobile home or furnished storage unit would make me a nice "Model Airplane Retreat" !!!

Man! that is SO cool. Glad to see a model still going after so long with the original owner there to enjoy it. Great job, Kim.

Re: Thursday Felt Like Sunday
Thanks Mark !
We've got several of them that have survived. The one that didn't was Wayne's original Cox PT-19. It provided the first dose of "Real Model Flying" for me. It WAS pretty bedraggled, with all kinds of patches and repairs, including a strip of aluminum along the right wing's leading edge to shore up some damage from losing a fight with a fuel can.
Wayne chucked it while I was away at school, figuring that we were out-growing the whole model airplane thing. The stories that old lump of plastic could tell !

Re: Thursday Felt Like Sunday
Wow, what a nice setup! Big van, wide open spaces (but for the tree) and vintage models. No tree is safe when I get a chainsaw in my hands!
Pretty soon every day will feel like Sunday, I've been out of work for a while, the housing collapse sealed my fate. Sometimes I loose track of what day it is,
no more working for the weekend. It is crowded down here and its nice do do things during the week that are crowded on the weekends, like fishing.
Have fun and keep em flying!

That's a shame. I know how you can get attached to your first Cox PT-19. Luckily, I still have my first PT-19 from back in '69. I've replaced the engine twice, the wing three times, the fuselage twice, but only replaced the tail feathers once. Man, I'm glad I kept the first one all these years.....

Yeah, I"m a good one to talk as I didn't hang on to my QZ-19. Think I gave it's battered carcass to some kid starting out in the hobby...but really can't remember.
Luckily, I DO have a few photos...

Kim,
You are real lucky to have photo's of those fun times. In this day and age it's really easy to snap a photo with your phone, but back then it took a little planning ahead of time.

True!
Every photo was 'strategic'...and somewhat of a big deal. I'm constantly after my young charges to use their taken-for-granted technology to photograph their house, the street, the main drag in their town. I've got several photos in which people ignore the main subject and point to the old buildings in the background.

Re: Thursday Felt Like Sunday
Yeah Eric, I got mine directly from Joe Wagner, and will check to see if he still sells them. I still have my plans from Joe, and the "Patterns" I made from the Dumas version. It was changed slightly when they bought the rights from Veco, and was what I always considered to be THE Scout design until I met Joe at a S.M.A.L.L. Fly-In in Little Rock years ago.
I used the parts from a Dumas Scout's carcass to have a way to recreate the version I always loved, AND even built (gasp!) a +10% R.C. Version.
It fell victim to an unrecoverable flat-spin, and being a one-piece airframe, busted nearly everything when it hit !
The Orange Scout is a yet-to-be-finished version built from Joe's original plans.
I'll P.M. you as soon as I find out whats going on with Joe's plans...of course you can check too. In the meantime, let me know if you want a copy of the patterns from the Dumas version, and I'll send them to you for postage.
