Flying stunts at Congaree Thursday
Today, after almost two LLLooong years of recovering from a broken and fixed, re-broken, and then replaced hip, I finally got out to the field and flew PAMPA aerobatics without close supervision. It was a gusty swirling windy day and I was leaning back against it to lug it through some of the pullouts. But I managed to fly some square loops and 8s, round loops and 8s, inverted laps, and one reverse wingover(not quite fully overhead), but I got it back on the ground in one piece. By the end of the flight, it was starting to get ahead of me and I had a couple of scary moments keeping control. I was sure glad when it finally ran out of gas, and I was exhausted. I've got to regain a lot of muscle strength and stamina, and my balance is really shaky. My neck, not my legs, is causing me the most trouble. There's no hip pain at all, but I have a really hard time looking up at the plane. My right hand seems stronger since I got the Carpal Tunnel re-fixed last spring, so dropping the handle doesn't seem to be an issue any more.
Contest season starts in 3 weeks, with 2 events in May. If I can get a couple or 3 or 4 more practice days in, I hope to be flying for the judges. If not, well that's okay, but I'm gonna try my damnedest to get my legs back under me. It's really just good to get back out with my flyin' buddies. I have 2 capable stunt ships in my fleet, and I'll try not to slag any of them before May, Lol. Today I flew the IDS, the Intermediate Death Star, a big flapless profile LA46 plane. Tuesday is on the slate for next week, and I hope I can improve with every outing. I'll report back on that soon. If a contest was tomorrow, there's no way I could fly a full pattern, but I'm chipping away at it.
I'll be reporting back soon,
Rusty

Hey! You did it! Good for you. Many others would have thrown in the towel. Slowly but surely you will get back to where you were.
