Re: black widow
Those are hard to come by, most folks won't give up what they have. I get em from used or parts engines on eBay.

Re: black widow
EVERY metal Back plate I have for a reed valve Cox .049 is from many low cost E-bay junk engine purchases....they clean up and even polish very well......I am sorry to my good friends at Coxinternational and Exmodelengine but the plastic back plates are worthless in ANY crash....Period!

Re: black widow
I have hard darted my coroplast wing countless times with a plastic back on it. I have not had the back fail. Yes, grass and dirt, so relatively soft.
Another plane I crashed on its maiden flight and tore 3 ears off a metal back flying in the same field... go figure.

Re: black widow
I prefer the metal as well. I am also convinced it is generally stronger than the plastic. (I have also broken plastic backs)

Re: black widow
What I love about picking up a cheap "junk-engine".. is that if it's complete... many of it's parts are still useable. A "parts-engine" will always be useful.. and is definitely worth considering; if you have another running engine of the same type.

that's what I miss about swap meets, a babe bee, black widow, golden bee, $5, $10-$20 and no shipping!
Re: black widow
How I acquired 90% of my spares is from buying cheap lots of "junk" engines and disassembling them. Your best bet on a black widow backplate is buying a complete engine. Judging by the prices they sell for by themselves, a whole engine is almost cheaper most of the time. The best part is, you can use the backplate of your engine, and use the rest of the parts engine if needed or build something else. That's what makes these engines so great. So much interchangeability.

Re: black widow
Here is a new set, costly but it will most likely sell. If it was a gold tank I'd buy it.
