Aw man, that stinks. Maybe you can draw it up and send the specs to Gus and he can spare an hour to build it and ship it to you.Cribbs74 wrote:I still haven't started. Uncle Sam is keeping me busy!!!!
It might be purple, but so what.

Really? I seem to remember photos of what your hotel room looks like once you are done building a baby ringmaster.Cribbs74 wrote:I still haven't started. Uncle Sam is keeping me busy!!!!

Ron will probably win the speed contest, by using his custom closed needle-valve ...
Re: CEF speed contest Design Discussions
Yeah guys, no excuse. I will have it done. I have the wood bought, just haven't sat down to make it happen. I can make a functional plane in a week. I would be happy with dead last. I just like the fact we are doing a CL contest that includes flying!!!!
Roddie, that mouse engine was an anomaly. I usually build functional ones. Last year that unlimited dog took first so it really pays to tinker and test!

I bet he would! I would feel wrong flying someone else's build. Beside's I have crashed Doug's planes enough. His Nobler wasn't the first one I put into the ground... Just the first one I destroyed.

Yeah, his little drawing was funny for those not involved. I had it in my desktop background rotation but took it down when I thought you were coming to Cola. I knew you felt bad so I haven't put it back in the lineup.Cribbs74 wrote:I bet he would! I would feel wrong flying someone else's build. Beside's I have crashed Doug's planes enough. I retooled my table for the new builds today. The Yak is off to the side awaiting a paintable day, Saturday.

Nah, let the drawing fly. It's funny now. I did feel bad, but I think I have compensated him since then.

You guys...! That's all ancient history! (I did like the little mushroom cloud, though.) Water under the bridge, or balsa dust in the wind.
So Ron, Send me the specs of your racer, and I'll whip ya one up! Swear I won't make it out of lead sheets, either! You gotta compete in this one, and I won't paint it purple-you can. Ha ha!

Purple eh? Meh, not my thing. However I wouldn't be against a small purple accent.
Glad you are OK Mark!

Re: CEF speed contest Design Discussions
I got a pile of stuff on the table that will hopefully turn into an airplane soon. I figured the logical place to start would be the engine mount. I'd hate to build the rest and find out it won't fit properly.
I'll cut out the fuse tomorrow. Thinking of saving a lot of weight, I was planning to use foam board from the dollar store. But I weighed a piece of 20" x 30" x .1875" board at .58lbs. That works out to 8.31 lb/in^3, the same as average balsa, and that's before reinforcing and stiffening, so that was disappointing. Poof goes one of those ideas thought up while lying in bed at night. But I have a sheet of 1/4" x 4" left over from the Yak that should do nicely.
I'm going to keep it as basic and simple as possible and hopefully it'll go pretty quickly. I was fiddling with some assorted basswood sheets today that I bought, thinking I might need it, and it's softer than I expected, but not much grain. Interesting stuff. Maybe one of the thinner strips will be good for stiffening the wing... or something. I have a 4" x 1/4" Sig airfoil. I'll learn as I go. Other than the Kitty Cat platter, I've never scratch built completely from my own drawings. Where it balances is going to depend a lot on sheer luck.

Re: CEF speed contest Design Discussions
Lots of the stuff I fly, er, build, comes out of thin air. No plans, just balsa that's here. I DO make it a point to use a proven airfoil, e.g.: the Stunt-Stang is a PowWow airfoil that I whittled around, to make it taper all over the place; the Bonanza and A-7 Corsair were just whipped-up; the P-40 was from AeroFlyte plans-but I made the fuselage a built-up profile; the Magician that I changed around-was from plans; my Mouse Racers are 3 revisions, to the one that works best, and, on and on...
You can do it! Just use "plane" sense! Build with common construction practices-don't try to re-invent the wheel. Then, do the first flight with what is guaranteed to be nose-heavy, and don't try anything funny. Then move the CG to a more reasonable position, on successive flights.
Just build! Then go fly! Its fun!

That's definitely a good start!
Oh no... Be careful before you go any further!! This sign of solidarity is flirting with disqualification 'cause it's in a way not according to the contest rules. The rules say: "Models will be flown by the builder."

Doug hasn't confirmed yet. If he does all he will be doing is cutting the wood. I will be assembling and painting. If Jim feels that is a rule infraction I will be ok with that.

Ha ha, I've been watching this closely! The AMA "builder of the model" rule says it must be built from a "kit like state". So I think just a cut wood "kit"Cribbs74 wrote:Doug hasn't confirmed yet.
