Much-Neglected Ebay Black Widow !
Got this poor BW with an el cheapo Ebay impulse bid...figuring she may be War Dog's long-lost sister!
In the words of Charlie Brown, following the purchase of the his bedraggled Christmas Tree, "I think it needs me."
Not too much physical trauma, but it must have spent some amount of time unprotected in a damp environment as the piston and cylinder are solidly rusted together. The TD head left most of it's threads in the top of the cylinder, so it may be used as a "topper" for a "Desk Engine".
A little heat loosened the cylinder, and the whole assembly is now soaking in a Kroil tub to see if I can save it. I pulled a piston and cylinder out of the junk box to get the engine test-run in the meantime.
The tank and crankcase were pretty clean inside, but the backplate was coated with some weird crystalline goop which flushed out pretty easily. I also cleaned up and reinstalled the old metal reed to see how it'll work.
The whole thing cleaned up pretty nicely, and I'm gonna try a test run later today if our flying session gets rained or winded out.

I think there is some kind of law against that. Man, it hurts to see that. Ken

Wow!!! You're going to have to start a group of threads entitled: "Can this engine be saved??" and showcase a new dog each month. It looks like you may be able to recover most of this one, but that P/C may be destined for the trash.

Bang up job Kim!
What's up with the red driveplate?

Hey Andrew !
Might be a good idea, since I seem to have a perverse attraction to "Rescue Engines" !
Maybe good for an occasional column in Bernie's Quarterly as: "Kim's Kennel" !!!!
The "Miracle of Croil" is at work right now, so we'll see about that poor cyl/piston lump 'o rust !! If it breaks loose, and will run at all, I'll call it a success !

Not to my knowledge Kim although I'm no expert. All the ones I have seen or have just have the plain aluminum. Who cares though, it looks good. I was just wondering if it was some kind of anomally.

Boy Kim, you really put some elbow grease on that cylinder to rub that groove in
Nice job on the BW, reminds me of the PeeWee I had got in Jeremy's Uncle's Coffee Can-of-fun.

Kim,
If you run that cylinder and piston after freeing it up and polishing it, be sure to use lots of oil the first few very rich runs because any residual rust on either surface will act as a grinding compound.
Looking good so far!

Kim --
I'm really interested in how the Kroil soak has worked.
After reading your initial post, I did a little searching and found that it is apparently one of the best penetrating oils out there. Gonna order some tomorrow -- I've got some screws in an A5 receiver that will become the first test subject.
andrew.

The hard part is using JUST the right amount of pressure to get it perfectly round !!!

Thanks! I really enjoy seeing them come back to life, with as many of the original parts as possible.

Re: Much-Neglected Ebay Black Widow !
This deal with my Ebay BW's red drive plate is puzzling me. My "original" Black Widow...the one I never messed with because I classified it as a "Magic Engine" which ran great, and therefore was never taken apart...has a red drive plate. I THOUGHT I bought it new way back in the old days, but Rusty's description puts it post 1996. Either way, I can't remember ever pulling the drive plate, or otherwise messing with the case.
Not to say it couldn't have happened...just more mysterious details that can bug me...
1999 or so...the B.O.T.'s early days of aerial snooping with it's red-nosed Black Widow:

Re: Much-Neglected Ebay Black Widow !
I had read about the acetone/ATF mix some time ago, but have just not tried it. Since I have both on hand, it would be an easy mix to try. The upside is that acetone is an excellent solvent; the downside is that acetone is an excellent solvent. You just have to be careful about where it's applied since it may cause damage to surrounding areas.
