CL myth #4.....The outside loop

Re: CL myth #4.....The outside loop
You sound like my oldest son. He can fly the whole pattern, no problem. But the outsides kill him. I'd say like others, start inverted and if things aren't going good pull out with the shinny side up. Not the right forum for this but, bigger is better. I used an Akromaster with a Fox .15 steel fin oldie. I love the Akromaster, just ordered another this week. Any .15 will work, we've used O.S. .15 FP's and LA's also.

I have a 15x, going to install it on a flying clown. I heard the Akromaster is a good trainer. I will do an outside someday

I watched an experienced feller fly and he led the plane through manouvers. I think my technique needs work. As I tend to just give full up or down and keep my arm still.
Your on your way! You can use your wrist only, but it's going to take longer and it would be a lot easier moving your arm.
I remember years ago the AMA had a movie you could rent (with the original guy from NFL films doing the voice over) that showed guys flying stunt at a major contest. I surfed YouTube and couldn't find it but there's a lot of good video showing proper form. Just like swing a bat or throwing a football, not everybody's going to be the same, but there are certain technics that work better then others.

Thanks Mark!
I really wish I had picked this up as a kid. It takes time to develop those skills. On the other hand Ol' Rusty seems to have picked it up so there is hope for me yet!!!

Re: CL myth #4.....The outside loop
You know we just started into CL a year and a half ago and my boys seem to pick it up very easy. Me on the other hand, I need to put more time in to keep up. Don't tell
them though.

Ha!
Honestly though, at 56 your not old at all. Just older than me. My main point was you fly well and really got into it later than me. One thing you had going for you is that you flew CL as a kid.

Re: CL myth #4.....The outside loop
Yeah, I did wait till late to start stunting, but you're right, my emergency correction reflexes were well established long ago. That had to make a big difference in my learning curve.cribbs74 wrote:...Honestly though, at 56 your not old at all. Just older than me. Rusty,
If you were to go to a Stunt contest in Illinois or probably anywhere you'd be one of the younger wipper-snappers! I think the median age for stunt is north of sixty!

Re: CL myth #4.....The outside loop
I don't think anyone's mentioned this yet. Check the pushrod - if it can flex up/down/sideways, and if the control horn is on the top of the elevator, what might be happening is that it's flexing when you apply a lot of down, and this will result in a lot less down than you thought you had. I learned this the hard way, after whacking the ground 2-3 times with combat models. THEN someone told me I had to brace the pushrod.

Re: CL myth #4.....The outside loop
A definite must. Yep, George got it in post #4 on page 1. Good reminder though.

Re: CL myth #4.....The outside loop
Flex is something I check for before maiden flights. I have buried 4 different planes trying the outside loop. I would think that one of those planes didn't have pushrod flex. I am pretty sure it's just me.....

Re: CL myth #4.....The outside loop
Have you entered the loop as suggested from inverted flight? That's makes it just like a regular upright inside loop, only moving clockwise. Was that wider than an upright inside loop?
You need to put all those planes in the car and drive your ass over here so we can go fly.

No doubt Rusty, it drives me crazy that I have no one to fly with!
No, I have not tried while inverted. I will next chance I get. The wind here is crazy all weekend!!!!

Re: CL myth #4.....The outside loop
Here's another way to enter an outside loop - from the vertical! Pull up into a vertical climb, like you were going to do a wingover. Once the model is at about 60 degrees up, feed in full "down".

Re: CL myth #4.....The outside loop
Good idea, that will bleed off a lot of speed. If you start high, you'll have more of a chance to pull out if it looks like you're not going to clear the ground.iskandar taib wrote:Here's another way to enter an outside loop - from the vertical! Re: CL myth #4.....The outside loop
I have tried that, it didn't end well. I think at this point it's just time to get comfy with one plane and work at getting prodicient with it. It's fun to fly a bunch of planes, but they all fly different.
