Tach race 2013
Are we doing one this year? Who is hosting? I may be able to host if no one volunteers.

Re: Tach race 2013
I'm in for a submission, but doing the testing would be too much for me to handle. I hope some energetic generous soul steps up. Kim did a great job last year.

Well, I am willing to do it. However, my job makes me a bit unreliable as I can travel at the drop of a hat! If folks can be understanding if it gets delayed then I am game.

Re: Tach race 2013
Is this to see how many rpm's a certain engine can turn up? Is there a particular Cox engine being used? Is there also a limit to nitro used? Just curious. I have a .049 Black Widow case on my bench as a reminder to how many rpm's you shouldn't turn as the rod is sticking through the block. Ken

Hey Ken,
This is the brainchild of member Mark Boesen and Chris McMillin, and started over on the .049 Collectors Group. Here is a note on the 2009 Tach Race, written by the original Tach Race Host, Chris McMillin:
"Mark Boesen, our fearless leader of the 049 Collector’s Yahoo Group originated this winter event as a doldrums lifter for those in the colder states, and countries as well as a nice diversion for those in all “states of mind” around the globe.
It started as a “whatta ya’ think of this?” kind of thing and ended up a real event when Mark designated me as the head judge and engine runner due to my location where nice weather could be counted upon.
The event is simple enough, see which engine turns the highest rpm on the same prop and fuel on the same day in the
same conditions. The APC 4 .75x4 propeller was chosen and I procured some Sig 35% nitro, 20% castor fuel.
The engine categories were devised by Mark, he chose a Mouse 1 style class and an Unlimited class. Both had to be Cox
reed engines, Mouse conforming to the Mouse 1 AMA rules and Unlimited a more wide open class for the more creative
among us. All engines this year were to be based on a Cox reed valve engine, no Tee Dee’s, Shuriken’s, Cyclon’s, etc.
were allowed."
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I hosted our 2012 Tach Race last January, and used a gray 5-3 prop and fresh Sig 25%. We also added a "Novice Class" to encourage participation and experimentation by those not wanting to extensively modify their engines.
To say that I was intimidated would be an understatement, but Mark and Chris helped guide me a along, and a note from Mr. Paul Gibeault helped immensely by just reminding me to chill out and have some fun
I talked with WingingIt (Travis) yesterday, and we'd be willing to host it again as a team, but would also be glad to hand it off to anyone else who'd like to take it.

Re: Tach race 2013
Hey Kim,
Mark contacted me and explained how it all works. I had no idea of the origins either.
Anyway, he said he would consider letting me host the event. However, if you and Travis have things planned out already then maybe it would be best to have you guys do it. I didn't realize at the time you were already working it.

Hey Ron,
We hadn't done any big-time planning...Travis and I had talked a bit about doing it...knocking around the idea...so however and whoever does it will be great with me!

Re: Tach race 2013
I would like to see a Tach used that reads all 5 digits. Last time I was tied with someone at 18.5K. It would have been interesting to see who was faster.

I have a laser tach, which uses all 5, but you got to be quick to read them as they jump around quite a bit.

There are some that will hold the highest RPM in memory until cleared. I don't remember any names though.
Re: Tach race 2013
With a laser tach, do you have to stick a reflector on the prop? Some engines respond to balance changes more adversely than others, especially turning high RPM.
I think it would be better not to record 1 second spikes with a peak hold memory. When I claim RPM measurements on my engines, I like to see it hold it for at least a while. Just my opinion, I can see arguments for either way.

Re: Tach race 2013
I would bet there are better ways. I chose the laser tack to try something new as I didn't have a tach. In the video you can see the reflector on the prop and you can see how the numbers jump around.

Re: Tach race 2013
I need to start running my engines. I have two I am going to enter, both are new and need to be broken in.
Re: Tach race 2013
now is the tach race just .049's or can we enter a larger unmodified cox engine like a teedee .09?

RE: Tach Race 2013
Will the same Tach Race rules still apply as the 2012 Race? I have a reed engine that hits some outstanding tach numbers on 25% Hobbico and a 5x3 Rubber Ducky ST prop that might be fun to compare with others.
Will the Cox Grey 5x3 be furnished or would I need to send one?
I like the 25% fuel idea also.

Good point. However, they don't balance well.

Same fuel, same prop and same weather. That way it's fair for all entries.
