Our Family Tach Race 2-2-2013
My wife thought it was a good idea, so in the spirit of having fun, here is what our family has so far:
Unlimited:
Travis & Killer Widow
Mouse:
Travis & Patriot
vs.
Suzanne & SheDevil
(Winner gets Dinner at Gallagher's out without kids, win-win right )
Brandon & Black Widow
vs.
Logan & Silver Widow
(Winner gets a new Skylander and/or something Cox related...)
Over-all Fastest wins bragging rights ...wonder who that will be
(Prize to be announced... or not announced if I have to sneak it by Suzanne)
I'll post some pics and video our tach race, so stay tuned...

Great idea! I've been wondering how this would work out. Until I joined this forum I hadn't heard of a tach race.

I had not either... but then when I joined the forum I only had 1.5 engines, now I have 50+

Here are our engines...

Very cool. I hope it's a hot competition.
I hope Kim is doing well today.

Re: Our Family Tach Race 2-2-2013
Well what a disappointment. The Killer Widow on the Competition 5x3 prop would only do 18K but on the Safety 5x3 it does 20.5K
Re: Our Family Tach Race 2-2-2013
Maybe because the black one flexes and reduces the pitch. Everything will probably run slower on that stiff gray prop.

I haven't got the SheDevil started... I think my batteries are low... time to run to the store.

Yep, that's just one of the different variables that you'll run into when trying to compare RPM from one set of parameters to another.
It does sound like a lot of fun for everybody to videoing their engine running, but to try to compare RPM readings, there's just no way you can compare one to the other, unless every component is as identical as possible, even down to the same guy reading the tach. It kind of reminds me of a guy several years ago that was claiming crazy high RPM numbers for his Sure Start, only to find out he was running a .020 prop!
It's too bad you were unable to get your engines shipped out, I'd think you'd have a competitive engine or two.
Re: Our Family Tach Race 2-2-2013
Put on hold.... my wife had to go to the ER, nothing serious... I don't want to be running engines and not hear the phone ring, as she didn't want me to bring the boys up.
Re: Our Family Tach Race 2-2-2013
Thanks for sharing Travis.
Though you didn't get in on the CEF race, you
made the best of the situation. Cool.
Hats off to the winners,
Bob

Pretty good runs. I'll have to watch it when I can turn the sound up later on. My wife is watching the Puppy Bowl right now.

Interesting results, what prop is the regular tach-race done on?

Good runs. I was impressed with the Black Widow, nearly 17K from what appears to be a stock engine. I bet it would easily break into the 17's if you swapped over to a no drag spring starter.

Yes the BW is stock. I think the other engines need more run-in time... besides the Killer Widow, which was a shocker to me on that prop.

Yeah, those props tend to drag a bit. Still, it's the standard. I have a lot of props, maybe I should run a test sometime. I don't use the comp props much as I wreck too often and snap them. The MA 6x3 cut down to 5.5 work great except they are brittle as well. Have you messed with shims? As in cylinder/head shims?
