Dacron..... I just got some from Brodak. Is Fishing line better?

Dunno, haven't tried it yet. Very low stretch but requires a palomar knot. I bought a spool and will try it soon.

I've been using 10 lb. test spiderwire braid --- diameter of 4.5 lb. monofilament. It is very low stretch, low drag, but "slick". The palomar knot is the recommended knot as posted because the braid is slick and can unravel with some knots. There is a modification to the palomar called a "double palomar".
The spiderwire braid will get a little fuzzy with use, but it does not seem to affect the strength. It also has excellent UV resistance.

Andrew,
Excuse my ignorance but, why is Spiderwire better than Dacron? I am new on the CL scene. Dacron doesn't appear to stretch and it is plenty strong, at least for what I do. Not knocking you, just curious.

Re: Baby Ringmaster build (Maiden flight report!)
Nice looking Ringmaster!
If your gonna do a lot of flying I believe Spyder wire is definitely the way to go, I seem to recall 8 lbs. was the most common, with some using 5 lbs.?
Dacron does stretch, Spyder is a lot stronger, will last longer, and a little more aerodynamic. Try the o'l Dacron, then switch to Spyder, you'll see a difference in sensitivity of the controls.
Re: Baby Ringmaster build (Maiden flight report!)
Dacron is the old standy for small controlline planes.
The liitle spools of dacron line the you buy are actually pre-wound bobbins for commercial sewing machines. Dacron is used for sewing sails and outdoor covers for boats, equipment, etc.
Dacron will pick up oils from your hands when you wind up your lines and become stained and heavy.

Ron --
Never worry about questions --- particularly if it's about something I've posted. One thing I've learned to keep in perspective is the following quote, "Just because it's my opinion doesn't necessarily mean I'm right."
If you do a little searching on elongation of dacron vs spectra (spiderwire), I think you'll find that spectra stretches only about 20 to 30% as much as dacron giving a better feel. Over 35 to 40 feet, this can have an impact and reduce having to retrim your lines. Secondly, as Mark posted, since it's much stronger, the diameter is smaller for a particular line weight giving less drag. It's impervious to most contaminants and very UV resistant.

Forgot to mention, I broke down the wing and added the tip weight.

Re: Baby Ringmaster build (Maiden flight report!)
I used dacron for decades and it works fine for sport flying. It has more drag, and you should count loops and unwind it if you get more than 5 twists. It slides across itself better after it gets some castor on it. It can get too soaked though. It's strong and dependable. I use it for leadouts on my Li'l Satan. I use 30# spiderwire now because it's less likely to knot up in a tangle than the thinner line. I think I'm a loner on that one though.

Ron, the same is true for me, too. I just like the Spiderwire a little better, but the dacron is less expensive. Whenever new products become available, I like to give them a try. Some I hang on to, some I discard.
Re: Baby Ringmaster build (Maiden flight report!)
I like dacron for tying bladders too. I wet it first so it doesn't slip loose when I tie my square knots.

Try waxed dental floss sometime --- it's tough and the wax makes for a good knot.
Re: Baby Ringmaster build (Maiden flight report!)
BTW Ron:
I went with the Brodak "Baby Ringmaster" because it features a beam rather than radial mount. Beam mounts are just more pleasing to my eye plus they are much less likely to sustain "battle damage" in flight.

Good point Dave, I chose the radial for the engine I wished to use. It had a little more "Old Timey" look to it, which I liked.
I have visions of a Jr. Ringmaster in my future that will be Beam mount.

Dunno, I have a Baby Clown, Jumpin Bean and a Perky on the way. I also have plans for a Veco Scout from Kim to do. I guess either the Bean or the Clown.

Re: Baby Ringmaster build (Maiden flight report!)
I managed to maiden the Baby Ringmaster today. It's still in one piece so it was successful. I took it easy to get a feel for it. I loved the way it flew very smooth, glide was excellent and it is very very responsive.
I did one loop just to see how it does, wasn't pretty but I was running a babe bee with a 6x3 prop so it was a tad underpowered. Tomorrow I will throw on a 5x3 or 5x4 and if I can handle that I will swap on the Black Widow. Built wings fly amazing!
Sorry no video, I was setting fence posts all day and broke away for 1/2 hour to do the maiden while waiting for concrete to set then went back to work
For now here is the castor soaked dirty girl.

Yes, there is a world of difference between a slat wing and a real wing. It'll almost glide as far as you want it to and let you pick your landing spot and land like a feather. I like trying to land next to the stooge. Sometimes I get it. I promise you'll like it with a faster setup. You may find it easier to fly because you have tighter lines and the response to your control input happens with authority. Your loops will be much easier to finish. It'll boost your confidence a lot.
All I can see is the tail of it in the picture. Are you picking the Forum size 800 pixel option when you upload?
EDIT: Oh, nevermind you're using the same host as Mitch. His are too little. There must be some in-between with that host. I like Photobucket.
Nice covering job. I love it when they are all covered with exhaust goo!
