Wanted K&B greenhead Torpedo 19/23 prop driver

Post  ffkiwi Tue Apr 23, 2024 12:45 am

Anyone got one of these lurking in their spares box? I'm looking for the type with the 'D-shape' hole which matched a male D-shape on the crankshaft. I'm trying to restore an externally battered-but internally very good example to running order. its minus its entire front end-but I can deal with the prop washer and prop nut...the prop driver however would require a broach to produce the correct size and shape centre hole. The larger and smaller GH Torpedo displacements have tapered cone fit prop drivers so these are no use in this instance-it has to be 'D' hole one. I've tried a few other brand engine prop drivers-eg OS 15, 19-but these don't fit either unfortunately. About the only thing I've found that will fit is a British Frog 500 prop driver...which is a bit loose...but usable at a pinch.

Anyone?

Unfortunately Chris. I certainly don't have such parts, not even a .19 nor .23 Torpedo.

Here in US, the Torpedoes in good running shape command a heftier price than other brands / models. Plus here, those sizes seem harder to find.

I was fortunate to snag a decent .09 Torpedo with a good Champion glow plug on the Bay very reasonably last year, but that was a one-of-a-kind snag.

This is a problem with K&B's . The .29's that I've come across are almost always missing and the prop driver costs more than a parts engine when you do locate one. I've mentioned this issue on the forum in the past. Certain engines have parts that seemingly go missing. In the past whenever I have a D shaped shaft requiring a prop driver, I make it from aluminum and drill and tap a small set screw to lock onto the flat in which I knurl the face of the aluminum.

Hmn-I could do that Ken-in extremis....I'd have to make a D-reamer....not an impossible job...but a pain for a one off job. That would work for ally....I doubt it would cope with steel....so I'll give your suggestion a bit of thought...i have the knurling facilities....so prop drivers per se are not that great a challenge-nor tapered collets......D-holes however ARE a bit more of a home machinist challenge..
