Wen Mac .049 - Conditioning.
Horacio Banus, is a friend from my country who sent me this beautiful Wen Mac .049 engine as a surprise.
In his message he told me: Mauricio, I am sending you this engine so that you can have fun restoring it. The engine has very good compression.
Horacio is the person who appears in the photo here.
My response to Horacio: thank you very much Horacio for this gift, I will try to do the best I can with it.
Here is the engine and the jobs are:
Recondition the crankshaft, since the propeller holder thread sector is broken.
Make spraybar and regulation needle.
Install a new glow plug.
Improve your overall aesthetics.
Make acceleration control ring.
Commissioning and testing.
So...I've already started working on this beautiful engine!
Meanwhile, does anyone on the forum have photos of the Wen Mac .049?? acceleration ring device, (marked with red arrow in the photo below). I would like to make one for you to have acceleration control. Thanks in advance!
Here I continue with some questions... Can you indicate how much rpm this engine generates in your personal experience?
RPM?
Propeller?
Fuel?
Glow Plug?
Thank you!

Hello Mauricio , i don't think Wen-Mac had a throttle ring that I know of ? Here is some background that will help but i can't find anything that is for just that engine YET ! lol The MK II .049 Wen-Mac https://www.adriansmodelaeroengines.com/catalog/main.php?cat_id=308 https://sceptreflight.com/Model%20Engine%20Tests/Wen-Mac%20049.html

Re: Wen Mac .049 - Conditioning.
Hi Mauricio! WOW.. that is a beautiful engine!!
CEF member rsv1cox (Bob) gave me some Wen Mac engines a while back.. and one of them had this throttle-sleeve. I have not had the engine running.. so I don't know how well it works. The engine/cylinder is more like the later Testors engine.. but it may show you a way to proceed forward.

Thank you very much Roddie and Eric, all information is very useful for me in this case.
Roddie, thanks for the photos, I don't realize what the original part (the regulation ring) looks like.
Looking at your photo, is it something like the drawing I leave here?
Horacio sent me this information:
I read in the report 14000 rpm with a 6 x 3 tornado!!...that's a lot of revolutions!!...I don't know if I will achieve that parameter!

Re: Wen Mac .049 - Conditioning.
I started with the crankshaft...try to save it, since it is broken in the area of the propeller thread...then...
Make a device to take the crankshaft.
I gave temperature on the front to be able to turn and drill.
everything is going well!
I made the thread in the center of the end, at 3 mm.
I reheated the area and tempered the crankshaft with a dip in oil.
The crankshaft was saved!!...

Re: Wen Mac .049 - Conditioning.
There is a "clip" below the ring.. but the ring will move "upward" quite a bit before it contacts a cylinder-fin. You can see it when looking at the cylinder-port in the below photos. I don't think that the ring is supposed to move up and down like that. There may be a part missing.. but that's all that was there when I received it.
Re: Wen Mac .049 - Conditioning.
More info. for you Mauricio. There seems to be a clip missing from my throttle set-up. There should be "two" clips. These clips key-into the cylinder; above and below the ring. I've never seen this type of clip before.. but I think that you could easily make them from music-wire. I was afraid to remove the one clip.. but it came off fairly easily without breaking.
The ring slides completely over the cylinder and head. The two clips are what locate the ring in the proper position in relation to the cylinder's exhaust ports.

Re: Wen Mac .049 - Conditioning.
mauricio engine is completely different from this model with throttle control And doesn't use the same crankcase and the cylinder is different But the drawing diagram of the part remains that adapted for this cylinder yes it could work

Re: Wen Mac .049 - Conditioning.
I don't like the return-spring set-up. It can interfere with the ring's function by "catching" on the cylinder's exhaust-port. You would likely want a clip for a servo-link, similar to the Cox set-up.
Re: Wen Mac .049 - Conditioning.
The spring would not be necessary this throttle it is normally used and operated with a cableroddie wrote:I don't like the return-spring set-up. Yes.. that's true.. but as I mentioned; it does give him an idea of how to proceed.
Here's some measurements that might help..
ring height= .242"
slot cutaways= .102" X .187"
ring ID= .7395"
cyl. OD= .7380"
clip-wire dia.= .041"
Both cyl. and ring are iron-based (magnetic)
Re: Wen Mac .049 - Conditioning.
Thank you very much Kim!...you know, you are a person for whom I have a lot of affection!, thank you friend!
Roddie!, thank you very much friend, you are always very attentive!
David, thanks, yes you are right, Roddie's and mine's engines are different, but it is still interesting to see how they came up with the system.
David, I think I will go for my own design, something close to drawing, since I think it is the most adaptable.
From the traces printed on my engine, it seems to have once had some system, but who knows what it was like or what it was?...well, I don't know.

Re: Wen Mac .049 - Conditioning.
Then you have to make the spray bar and the regulation needle.
I don't have the exact measurements, only the crankcase hole, so everything is speculative!
The spray bar is made from a piece of a bronze key.
The regulation needle is made from a bicycle spoke.
This is an aluminum tube that is routed inside the spray bar duct, to achieve a better fit between the needle cone and the interior closure of the spray bar.
You can see the finished spray bar here.
then...making the needle...

Beautiful craftsmanship Mauricio!!…. Along with well prepared planning….. I will be interested to see how you make the accelerator ring for the Wen-Mac…. Good on you Roddie for providing those closeup photos…

Re: Wen Mac .049 - Conditioning.
friends, thanks for all the help!!
I am going to place a spring in the needle to avoid that micro movement and in this way that the movement is always firm.
Later I will make the acceleration system.
I am very happy with the result.
THANK YOU HORACE!
