Remove .010 Cylinder with thottle sleeve
Hi there!
I'm overhauling a few Tee Dee .010 engines and had a brand new throttled piston/sleeve assembly.
Since the throttle sleeve covers the exhaust port, the Cox tool can't be used to tighten the cylinder to the crankcase.
No problem, says me. I'll just tighten the cylinder and glow head together!
Duh!
Now how will I ever get the cylinder off if needed?

Could it be an 0,020 engine? I've never heard of a throttled 0.010 cylinder

Re: Remove .010 Cylinder with thottle sleeve
On my 049-s with no flat on the top fins I file the flats. Given the tiny dimensions this may not work on the 010. If you still try, put an exacto blade between the top and second fins when filing to make sure you only file the top fin

Use a leather belt, a thin leather strip. Wrap it around cylinder and grip it with a flat nose pliers by the ends of strip then gently turn it. Wet leather strip has more gripping power, because it bites the cylinder fins.
Do not grip the cylinder with pliers!

Use a leather strap in the same way as one would remove an oil-filter from a car, i.e. the strap should tighten from the applied torque. A bit of heat is also useful, that will soften congealed castor-oil residues. One can also use a bit of fine emery cloth in order to improve the friction.
Below is my version, nothing "fancy" is needed

Expand the retaining ring and slip it up onto the cylinder. Remove the two halves of the exhaust "ring". Proceed as usual.
Edit:
If it's not a split sleeve, what is it? Who made it?

I stared at the assembly confident it's a one-piece sleeve; then I got out the magnifying glass. It's in fact a two-piece sleeve, so this will work. Thanks!
I have one more in the package: "Cox C01375, .101 piston and rod and cylinder", and with the throttle sleeve.
I got it from an estate, so the sleeve could have been added later.

Re: Remove .010 Cylinder with thottle sleeve
Ah, it was assembled already. I was wondering how you got it together without realizing it was split. (It has to be split due to the neck on the cylinder.) The fit has to be just right to get it working well, so it's not surprising the split isn't clearly visible.
Anyone recognize it? 1375 is the Cox part number for a .010 piston and sleeve, but Cox didn't make the throttle sleeve.

Re: Remove .010 Cylinder with thottle sleeve
Seriously rare part, should tread with ultimate care - not many out there now.
What is the game plan for the engine?
Steve with Radical RC use to sell the throttle ring assembled with the .010 cylinder.
There was a slip on throttle ring for the .020 if I recall made at that time too.
The guy that made the .010 sleeve did a good job setting them up - a rare moment in time.
Circa 1996 thru 2008 rough timeline - still selling products...
https://www.radicalrc.com/index.php
I would imagine at least 100 of the .010 throttles made it out the door.
Testing the sleeve here:
I have that tank / carb body setup as well with the silver choice in scheme.

Well, not sure yet. I collected several plans and would love to fly it! Obviously something that could take advantage of a throttle. Littlest Stick, or a small FF replica.
Great throttle response on that one! Wow!
Curious, is the tachometer you show a phone app? Or is that a purpose-built tachometer?

What rpm's and speed did you get with the green prop? Is it really from a drone?

Here are the stats from the flight,
T style 3x2 drone prop made for 35- 50w brushless motors.
TD .010 / Test Flight 3x2E Green Drone Prop
Best pass cross wind 32,792 rpm / 62 mph / per prop calc.
Best down wind pass: 33,941rpm / 64 mph prop pitch speed.
Scratch built with a SIG Airfoil plank of balsa for the wing:
16.5"x4" wing span 66sq. in.
