Cox Engine of The Month
Miss America with throttle control

Miss America with throttle control
This Miss America stopped me in my tracks at the swap meet. The plane is a little "crispy", but - a throttle ring? On a Miss America? I never knew there was such a combination.
I wondered if the throttle control was a later addition, but the hole through the fuse, with crimped brass eyelets, says "factory".
The lower cowl screw came out readily, for a closer look at the engine. There is a bit of line still attached to the ring.
Interesting how Cox did the return spring.
The engine is dirty, but appears undamaged. The ring is stuck, but the engine turns over. It is soaking in fuel right now, tomorrow I'll get it cleaned up.

Re: Miss America with throttle control
Nice find , they all had throttle control till the last edition with the upright engine .. yours looks like 1972-1975 >> Description:
2nd version, side mounted engine, bolt on landing gear with rubber tires, straight trim. The engine 190-7 was equipped with a spring loaded throttle ring. http://www.mh-aerotools.de/airfoils/cox_frameset.htm

Re: Miss America with throttle control
Wow, Eric I did not know that.
The engine cleaned up easily. Mostly it was just dirty from sitting around for years. I did slightly adjust the C-clip on the throttle ring so that the spring would go in the front hole, and the control line in the rear hole. It seemed like a better way to arrange things.

Re: Miss America with throttle control
Mechanically speaking I deduce the following:
Surely the throttle ring function works crossover for the following reason.
If it is connected as indicated by the line and the red arrows, when the engine warms up, the force of the spring and the force of the draft control may cause the seeger ring to expand and not tighten the speed regulator ring. The distance between A and B becomes larger, therefore it is possible that they do not move together, that is, the seeger (C) ring moves differently from the speed (D) control ring.
While if you connect it crossed, indicated by green lines and arrows, the distance between A and B is maintained, and it even tends to tighten the throttle control ring, which guarantees that even when there is temperature, the seeger ring and the ring of speed control, they will always move together, in unison, guaranteeing the correct throttle setting desired by the pilot. My humble opinion.

Re: Miss America with throttle control
Happy Thanksgiving, CEF’ers!!
Mauricio, I didn’t consider the effect of thermal expansion on the throttle function. Thanks for pointing that out. I agree that it will tend to loosen the fit, as will pulling the clip in the “opening” direction. Still, the fit of the clip to the ring is quite snug, and the return spring is light.
I re-assembled the plane, and tied a piece of Dacron line to the throttle. It works perfectly when not running, at least.
Throttle open.
