How cool is this!?
How cool is this!?
I have been experimenting in my "evil lab" (hobby room). And this is the result:
It is offcause the gold head on the right i am refering to, the other is just for comparison.
Uhh, i am getting an idea for the next "engine of the month, Bwa ha ha ha.....

lol, that's pretty cool.
is it real gold?
i would be afraid that it would come off through the heat when you run an engine with that thing.

No it is not gold, i was only refering to the colour
It is a kind of anodising i am trying to learn.

Thomas

I don't know, will have test the plug to see if the filament is affected in any way.
It take some time also, because the part has to be very clean to get the colour even all over the part.
But it looks good

Did you anodize the bottom side of the head? If the filament has any coating, it may not work. The ignition is due to the catalytic reaction between the platinum on the filament and the methanol; heating the filament just increases the speed of the reaction. The filament likely will not get any coating, but it may be affected by the sulphuric acid.
Anodizing can also act as an insulator, so you will need to ensure you are able to get good contact with the plug and center pin.
It does look good --- if you have any problems, I'm sure you'll get them worked out with future plugs.
Re: How cool is this!?
Hi Andrew,
Thank you for the advices.
It is not a normal anodiceing, it is more like a aluminium dye (my little secret).
I have just posted the plug on the picture to John Goddard so he can test it, i am going skiing next week
and will have to catch up with work afterwards.
If this does not work, i guess that i will find a way of capping of the lower end when i dye it.
Regards

Thomas --
Since you're dyeing rather than anodizing, it will simplify keeping the filament clean. Cover the filament hole with a small piece of paper (a portion of an adhesive label will work) or tape, then press in some modeling clay or drip paraffin from a candle to cover it. When done, pop out the paraffin or clay --- the paper or tape keeps the filament hole from gettng clay or paraffin in it. Paraffin is usually fairly inert and will not contaminate most processes.
Enjoy your skiing --- living in the flatlands with hardly any snow, it's something I've never done.
