FAI Open Power Champs
I thought this might be of interest to any member who has never seen Open Power competition freeflight models.
These models and engines really are the ultimate in free flight, watch the rates of climb!
The engines used are a bit like Drag Racer engines, always just on the edge of blowing up! This was what serious aeromodellers aimed for in the days before the Great God R/C took over the world!

Yes, the climbs are spectacular, these things are powered by .15 racing engines, tuned and running often in excess of 30,000 rpm in the climb. The engine runs are restricted to 10 seconds, but engines don't last very long!

Re: FAI Open Power Champs
yeah, i can see why these engines would not last as long, so many rpm's

Re: FAI Open Power Champs
Many of the modifications to both NORVEL and COX 1/2A engines were prompted by freeflight competition. Doug Galbreath's conversion head for the NELSON pylon plug was one result of the search for high RPM performance.

That's 1/2A power, max engine size of .049, open power is (or used to be) any size engine and model (Hence "Open") but has more or less standardised on .15s now, same principle of course, it will be interesting to see how much it goes for, at the moment the engine and timer alone are worth more than the top bid!

Duration of flight, there is a "Maximum" time set, which can be anything between 2-5 minutes per flight, "maxes" are set depending on flying conditions, dead calm, for example, they are usually set high, 4 mins or more, high winds, right down at the bottom end. A set number of maxes in a set time are required to win, such as 5 maxes in 2 hours.
Nearest score to a perfect possible wins. This is nowhere near as easy as it sounds here! Time to achieve the total includes all recovery times, hence the shorter maxes in windy conditions, if you have to run a mile to get the model back after each flight you are soon pressed for time!
(Please don't hold me to times or rules quoted, I am MANY years out of date, but the principle remains the same!)
