Ya...I WAS gung ho after retiring.....It has taken nearly a year to get this far! Got interrupted with a move and damned clinic appointments!
This is going to be an awfull lot of "Key Lime" green! Have to figure out some contrasing color that goes good with it.......should be able to see it OK!......

Prepaid and "reloadable" cards work for online purchases.
Looking good. I have used rustoleum enamel and it is quite fuel resistant, takes hours for problems, so clean up when done. Polyurethane is practically fuelproof.
Against lime...Orange and lemon yellow. Looks like fruit.
Many many color choices...

Good color suggestions Phil! ...Orange sounds good! All I could think of for contrast was black! Ya...the rustoleum with finale polyurethane coat worked good on the last one!

OhBee, was that a spray on polyurethane that works?

Yes it was... Krylon clear satin is what I used. The plane in my signature was done with it. Only 6 flights but no issues! At least not with the paint!

You missed that eh Jim? I believe there was a hint in another topic once......I had been out of the loop for awhile with the screwed up summer and moving and all.

Good for you! I'm glad you could make use of it. Knowing this gives me a warm fuzzie inside.

Its fast and twitchy...or I'm twitchy? ...Bottom of wing is mostly clear packing tape from landing on hay stubble!.

I noted twitchiness too! That is, until I used an RSM Renger 1/2A exponential control handle with only 2" line spacing. Then it smoothed out quite a bit!

I flew it on an old green cox handle spaced pretty narrow. Don't recall...lot of that stuff is in my RV out at sisters farm.

Re: Dope free build
Bee sure to let the Krylon paints cure good , i found that with 35% N it would blister BUT i don't think i let that one cure long enough ( it was a race plane and i was running out of time to fly ) Other than that one time No problems . Yes the Orange and Lime green or white !

Re: Dope free build
Looking sharp, OhBee!
A couple coats of Deft should seal it up good. The first one or two may be thinned down if you want to get deep into the tissue. You will know because instead of being shiny wet, yet cloudy (dry tissue under the Deft), it will be shiny wet, and translucent-almost see-through.
Give it a couple of days to thoroughly dry so you don't inadvertently poke a hole with your brush, and then a couple of full-strength Deft to finish seal the wing. Don't expect the same transluscence, since the tissue is more or less sealed by this point. You aren't trying to saturate the tissue like the first one or two coats.
You may sand gently between these final coats, but stay away from the ribs and other hard edges so you don't cut the tissue. Be gentle near the LE and TE.
Then a week or so for final out-gassing of the Deft, and into your paint booth for final color.

Re: Dope free build
Jim...how thinned down ?....50/50 ? Should I also tissue cover the rest of that center sheeting?

Re: Dope free build
If you tissue the sheeting, then the texture will match all the way across the wing...try to minimize the overlaps. Then you can cut down the overlap a bit with some 120/240 sandpaper. If you cut your sheeting cover such that you can just about butt the edges together, then you won't need to work any overlap at all.
Or, Deft the sheeting until it builds up to near the level of tissue. This is all personal preference, and really purely just to get it to your satisfaction.
I don't try to keep my planes. I don't try to trash them prematurely either. I need the room, and I like to build. Since I expect one to last only a couple of years, well, I hope I learned enough to carry to my next build, or next flight.
That Scientific P-40 sure looked swell right after I finished it. It flew acceptably well for the "old me" jumping back in. I flew it more aggressively that I did my first Lil Satan. However, my Stuntman 23 could out-maneuver that P-40. I was ready to move up to my next build so I decided it was time to fly it like I stole it.
Hopefully I learned enough so I can fly my next one better! Hopefully, you learn how to build better with yours, and you carry the knowledge on to your next one.

Re: Dope free build
This thread is great as well cause I am watching these covering techniques for my Hi Thrust Viking in teh other thread. I have dope, but want to try other alternatives. The only problem is that I do not know if mine will look anywhere near as good as the subject here! You're doing a great job, keep up the good work!

Re: Dope free build
I got a lot of great help from the guys on here! ...I'm fussy,...I take my time, and do a lot of reading on the subject. Lots of breaks as I ponder my next move. So far so good. Made a few mistakes here and there....hopefully filed away for the next project...which is twice as big!
