Cox Nitro Cat

Cox Nitro Cat
Hi Everyone,
I am new to this forum and just picked up my first Cox product since I was 10 years old or so! Really pumped to assemble and get it running.
Anyone know anything about the engine on a Cox Nitro Cat? I had this boat as a kid and remember it being a bit under powered. It also could be that I was far less mechanically inclined in those years so the engine many have not been running to its full potential.
That being said I still may try an engine swap on this if it needs more power. I have done a bit of research on the different .049 engines to see which ones make the most power. Tee Dee seems to be the best from what I have gathered. Also a lot of people seem to like the black widow.
Any insight is much appreciated!
Here is a link to a similar product for anyone not familiar with the Nitro Cat as I have not figured out how to upload pics on here yet.

Well Hey Cobra! WELCOME TO THE FORUM!
Thanks for the link to the Nitro Cat! That’s a Cox model I haven’t seen before, but looks like a fun one to run ! I have a larger version called the Dumas Swamp Buggy.

Thanks for the reply! I'll look on ebay for a Cox Venom. Is Texaco the engine that I have with the kit? Sorry probably a newbie question. These little .049's seem to have quite the learning curve to catch up on!
Re: Cox Nitro Cat
Cobra. Your engine is not a common one. It basically looks like a Babe Bee only with an 8cc tank. Only one like that I know of was in the Cox Spitfire and called a Silver Bee. I think maybe there was a car engine with the unvented silver 8cc tank as well.
Texaco had a black case in most cases and a non-stunt tank like yours only red. Later Black Widows were all silver but had the vented stunt tank, as did the Golden Bee.
If you go looking for a Venom on-line you may get a bit of a shock.

That is, the genuine Venom. I doubt you'll find an original. Current ones for sale new are cosmetic reproductions.

Re: Cox Nitro Cat
Welcome to the forum!
I've never seen this model. Way cool!
The Texaco engine mentioned earlier can swing the bigger prop, but only because it has been de-tuned for endurance at slow rpms. It was built to turn slower and longer for really floaty free flight models.
I suggest you stick with the original engine on your model, and build a similar reproduction for trying different engines. Once you know which engines do what, then you will have a good handle on how to modify your new model once...if at all.

cobra51585: welcome to the FORUM. We are a group from all over the word and from about 14 to 83 years old or so.
The Texaco engine also usually has a taller glow head with more fins. I guess for better heat sinking. The larger tank, as already mentioned for more run time.
As you may know you don’t necessarily need an attached tank. The engine can be run from a tank in the front of the boat, or swamp buggy as that item is called.
If you enter “swamp buggy” into the “search” box on the left side of the page above LATEST TOPICS you can find other posts that talk about other similar swamp buggy’s.

Welcome to the Forum Cobra!! First off before you go spending a bunch of money , run what you got to see how it performs and then you can look into more power by tuning and reproping Nice Swamp Buggy !!

Re: Cox Nitro Cat
This was literally my very first glow model and cox model. I loved it. I was about 9 or 10 when I got it. I was actually quite intimidated by how fast mine was. I always ran mine on morning dew wet grass at the park. if I ever come across another one I'm definitely going to try and get it. Maybe you can get a little more speed out of it by getting the lightest possible radio and battery gear. I seem to remember it having pretty chunky gear inside.
