COX 049 Cessna 182 Skylane - MINT!

COX 049 Cessna 182 Skylane - MINT!
I bought the COX 049 Cessna 182 Skylane off eBay and it was delivered the other day.
It was NIB and even the box is in perfect condition!!!
So yesterday I found another one NIB but they were selling it for over $300. It did include the original COX Cadet radio (which I wouldn't want) but I do want a 2nd one to fly and this one to keep as part of my vintage collection...
I updated my BLOG with pics and an unboxing video here...

You must have a really great job. Seriously, $300.00? It was like $29.00 new. I bought an electric version, I know bad word, back then and my friend flew it into the ground. He said he knew how to fly, and he was my boss. We were on a Naval contract at Pt. Mugu while working for General Dynamics-Electronics, circa 1981.

Re: COX 049 Cessna 182 Skylane - MINT!
Actually, I couldn't get myself to pay over $300 either so I passed on that one that sold today but it sold in less than 24 hours. I paid $150 plus shipping and tax so mine still came out to be a little pricey but under $200, plus I was able to apply a $20 PayPal credit to the order. There is one on eBay selling right now for more than what I paid but it's beat up a little and possibly missing parts. Then again, it's been sitting on eBay for some time now.
Sorry to hear about your boss crashing yours - OUCH. What can ya do or say when it's your boss!?
So these were around $30 back then? By the way, when was this plane officially released or around what year? The bottom of my box is stamped 10/16/89, the one that sold on eBay today was stamped 11/21/88. BUUUUT I have a COX catalog (came in my EZ Bee kit) that shows the Cessna 182 and it says "New this year, the 1990 COX Cessna Skylane..." so did this come out in 1990? Because I was just a kid, maybe 11 or 12 years old when I bought my EZ Bee and I don't think the Skylane was out, otherwise I would have passed on the EZ Bee and bought this Cessna! I always loved this plane and felt it looked very scale. Check out the pics of the catalog below...

Nick: I’m not exactly sure when it came out. I worked up at Pt. Mugu NAS from 1979, year my youngest daughter was born, thru 1984 and now as I remember the electric version I bought was exactly like the cox, but was sold thru hobby lobby or one of the big hobby chain stores. I will try to update this post with the Hepperle website which has dates for all the cox products.

The website is www.mh-aerotools.de
I didn’t see the Cessna 180 there for some reason. But am still looking thru Wikipedia. I hate it because anyone can edit it and change things to anything true or not.
More later.

The Cox Model Data Base
Happydad, you're right! It is from that website you just linked...
The Cox Model Data Base Link:
https://www.mh-aerotools.de/airfoils/cox_modeldatabase.htm
It does show the Cessna Skylane (all 3 model #'s) as 1985!
The kit I just bought is model/part #90406 btw. See pic of my box below...
So this brings up an interesting point. Since my production stamp shows 10/16/89...
...then my model is the first of the 3 they produced so then can I assume this was not the "improved" model for 1990? According to the catalog description it "...includes a sturdy blow molded fuselage." So go figure. I'm thinking then the info in that pic in the COX catalog I posted means "New for 1990..." is the Cessna was upgraded not that it was a new model being released in 1990 - again, just guessing here. ?
Btw...I never knew there was a Cessna Skylane II! interesting they don't have a pic of it either...
Also, this is the website in Germany that I was told about yesterday when I called COX International @ 877.769.1779. Yesterday I spoke with Bernie (VERY nice guy) who told me about that website in Germany. Bernie's website (COX International, here in the USA) sells the COX engines and some parts and kits if they have them available. Here is his website...

Re: COX 049 Cessna 182 Skylane - MINT!
Nice Nick
My only claim to Cox foam airplane fame is this EZ Bee found at a flea market for around $20. I think it was TL Anderson that sent me a spare radio for it. I haven't put it in the air yet, difficult to find clear flat space here in WV.
BTW - Bernie is the guy here. If you scroll up a bit to the banner on the left side you will find his website Cox Int. Just click on it. Brings you right to it.

Re: COX 049 Cessna 182 Skylane - MINT!
That's awesome Happydad! Yep, that's the same kit I bought on eBay as you saw but I certainly paid a whole lot more than $20 for mine. Good for you, what a deal!!!!!
Yes, Bernie said they are on this forum too which is great! I asked him if they'd ever consider doing a re-release of some of the popular COX models, especially since this is being done with so many other brands right now (i.e., Tamiya, Kyosho, Team Associated, etc.) but he said it would have to make business sense as the #'s probably don't support it. I could see it being difficult with the planes especially but would be awesome if some billionaire decided to do it for the love of the hobby! I think Walt Disney would if he were still alive today!!!

Looks like you found it. For some reason I didn’t think to look in airfoils. I just looked under models.
Airfoils to me are the shape of the wing cross section. BTW I got a D in German in 9th grade and switched to wood shop-metal shop.
p.s. I found a foam fuselage-Wing version of a Cessna on a popular foreign website for either $39 or $49 white with some decals, can’t remember the color, maybe orange. Very nice lines, but not a cox. 1200mm, 47inch, wingspan. PM me for info. I hate the website due to a bad experience in the past, but they have lots of good, inexpensive, stuff. My opinion.
Happydad may the 4th be with you.
