Re: Cox .049 QRC Cessna 182 Skylane
Thanks guys! The plane flies much better with micro servos and receiver now verses the Cox/Sanwa RC equipment that was in it when I was a kid. High speed fly-bys are a blast! On one flight, my daughter flew an altitude flight and this little plane was a tiny dot in the sky when the engine shutdown. It has a fantastic glide ratio and landings were so smooth. We are looking forward flying it again when the winds calm. Another thing that was really cool was the muffler. When I flew it in the mid-80's, I never closed the muffler being afraid to see a decrease in power. Well...that was not an issue at all. Closing the muffler didn't make a noticable difference in performance, it just made the engine a little quieter. Honestly, it was not the same having the aircraft fly past with the engine muffled. I prefer it screaming...the way it should! Huh...what!

Yup maybe outset ailerons and inset flaps!
cool!!
Thats a very cool story, how about some vids?
Mine is still new in the box,I will give its older brother the cessna centurion flight time first as it was in a less pristine condition when I got them.
But actually, the 049 cessna`s are hanging around waiting for my eyes to get old enough to need such large planes for flying

Yup your everyday flyers are micro now lol.
Re: Cox .049 QRC Cessna 182 Skylane
Could do inset ailerons and use them as flaps. That's what's on the QuickStick.

Yeah I suppose I never really tried inset ailerons but I was talking from a scale point of view for the Cessna.
yes

Thats the average configuration, but why weigh down such a sweet flying cox plane like that? Especially with this one, it`s not the average foam wing, this one is a little better than that and would need more modifylng than you expect

Yes a pity the smallest glow engine is 0.006!
What ever will you do when you need to go smaller?
Re: Cox .049 QRC Cessna 182 Skylane
No videos yet! This plane flies great with rudder and elevator. Several friends flew it on Sunday and they really enjoyed the plane. What was really cool was a senior member of our club brought out a 1930's free flight model with an .049 TD and added RC equipment. At one point we had two Cox powered RC planes flying over Edwards AFB and that's something that hasn't happened in a long time. As Evelyn was flying, I looked around and every pilot at the field was watching and supporting her! After one of the flights, Evelyn said, "Dad, I love the smell of Cox Engines in the morning!" That's my fault...I'm sure I'm to blame for that statement.

Hey it is not the worst thing you can say!
I mean the list of fuels I like the mell of in the morning is so so so so so so long.
Not enough guys appreciate rudder and elevator anymore.
Re: Cox .049 QRC Cessna 182 Skylane
I hear ya on the rudder and elevator! My first kit built 1/2A RC plane was the Champion Models Fokker Eindecker with rudder and elevator. It is a great flying model which I still have in my garage. As tempting as it may be to mod these old planes, there's just something simple and nostalgic about the original that I don't want to mess with. Now, have I added an electric motor to a 1/2A RC aircraft....YES...I confess! In this case, the model was underpowered with the .049 and it's a rare plane, so I went the safe route...with no regrets! Please don't turn against me...I had to do it! Honesty, this Sky Rally is far more enjoyable to fly with electric power. The original barely flew!

Re: Cox .049 QRC Cessna 182 Skylane
I get electric I suppose the only electrics I fly are the micro under 2oz.
I mean that plane would be lovely with a big mig .061.....
Re: Cox .049 QRC Cessna 182 Skylane
One of the challenges with the Sky Rally is the lite weight aluminum tubing used in the airframe. Engine out landing are tough on the frame. With electric, power on landings are greased and I have not had one tube bend yet!

Well if it is preserving the airfame I suppose I could let it slide

Cool!! Yeah....the Sky Rally is all drag and no glide! Smooth dead stick landings are tough to pull off!
