Wrong Zimmerman. Photos were from Internet search hits under topic, "images".rsv1cox wrote:George, I gotta say, I'm not getting either of your two cartoons. I can think of more appropriate labels for the first one rather than Zimmerman. Ryan Zimmerman is a popular player for the Washington Nationals;
When I posted that, I wasn't intending to even involve Zimmerman because I did not know who he was nor the history behind him. Missed it also because text is so tiny in the cartoon, hardly noticeable. I posted it because often the press reports are taken as gospel truth when in fact they are not. This is why I don't watch boob-toob (TV) news and a believe less than half I read.
Now that you mention this, I looked up Zimmerman and found: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/George_Zimmerman . Makes for an interesting read and how society continued to hound this man, already convicted in the press and in certain factions of the radical leftists and ultra-sensitive victimists. This was even though he was exonerated by a trial jury.
Again, the demented part of my mind did not know what this may historically represent politically. I was thinking more in the sense of that venerable by funny newspaper cartoon, "The Far Side". For example, polar bears breaking into igloos and taking people. One tells the other, "I like the ones that are crunchy on the outside and chewy in the inside."rsv1cox wrote:and regarding the second one, I can't connect anything like that occurring in any Scandinavian country, but seems there was a mass shooting at an island off Denmark a few years back. Some disgruntled guy with an axe to grind. Too many of those these days.

I was suggesting you might think about those linked solar powered motion sensing lights, and panels might give your bird feeder a nice roof. It’s not going to look quite the same as before, but since your used to regularly remodeling it...

I remember that event George. But I didn't make the connection. Some things you just try to forget. What happens when two idiots come together. Sadly we have a similar situation going on right now in Georgia.
Solar panels for the bird feeder, think of the possibilities. Mood lighting, a water cooler, music from Bye Bye Birdie.

6" well casing buried 6' deep and a few yards of concrete will make it bear proof. Make the feeder out of 3/8" plate steel welded with 7018 rods.
The bear proof garbage cans at Denali national park were 1/4" plate steel. They should have went with 3/8" core 10 plate as the ones in the park were all bent up and a corner was torn open. They were fastened to a concrete slab. Grizzly's vs black bears though.

I'm not sure where he got it, but's it not at his place or mine.
I know that bears are excellent climbers, but this is ridiculous.
"My" bear hasn't been back. I now fill the bird feeder early in the morning and by evening all the seed is gone.

Re: I can't Bear it
Bob,
Very good thinking my friend and it's easier on the bears! Bit of a hassle to fill up every morning, but still better then replanting the post and rebuilding the feeder.
Was sheltering with my youngest daughter and her family for a month or so, but finally back home again as my oldest daughter is visiting for six weeks. She is going back to Valdez then for a couple days to pack up and move here permanently.
I'm considering putting up my bird feeders again. I took them down years ago because the fat squirrels were tearing up the feeders and eating all the bird seed! My neighbor was putting out whole peanuts every day for the squirrels and soon had many more squirrels to feed (and raid my feeders). They even emptied my humming bird feeders and chewed up the plastic flower parts before digging the suet out my suet feeders! Haven't seen one damn squirrel since the neighbor moved away a couple years ago.

RE: I can't bear it
We love Reba McIntire and once my wife and I went to be part of the live audience at her TV taping in Hollywierd which was pretty cool.
Also for years Georgia Power had so many utility cuts by construction crews that they ran radio PSA's based on "the Night the lights went out in Georgia and the gas and telephone too" !!!
The song spoke of "Billy Jo the backhoe dynamo" who could dig faster and deeper than anyone until he forgot to have the utilities flagged. Then the refrain "the Night the lights went out in Georgia, the gas, and telephone too" so call before you dig! You Dig?
Clever....

When I worked in construction, we used to call the backhoe a pipe locator.66 Malibu wrote:The song spoke of "Billy Jo the backhoe dynamo" who could dig faster and deeper than anyone until he forgot to have the utilities flagged. 28 years ago working in facilities management for the Navajo Area Office, Bureau of Indian Affairs school system (we maintained the Department of Interior's 66 schools on the Navajo Reservation), out at a rural elementary school near Crownpoint, New Mexico, the school maintenance staff was trenching near a new portable building, dug up its yellow PE plastic gas pipe.
They sent us a section of pipe, wanted to know if the contractor who completed this new building used the right material. (PE pipe was fairly new, most gas pipe prior was steel.) I looked at its marking, then checked code, told them, "Yep, ASTM# such-and-such, he installed the right stuff."
I guess they were looking for a way to deflect the embarrassment and shift blame that they goofed by not having the line located.

RE: I can't bear it
The worst utility cut that caused the PSA announcements here in Atlanta happened about 2:00PM on a Friday afternoon when all computer systems and cable TV went down for all of North Georgia.
We all got off early because of it and driving home we found by radio that a construction crew had cut the main 18 inch optical cable between Miami and New York. Untold billions of dollars were lost due to interrupted stock trades and other transactions!!
The construction company was fined, as I recall, $250,000 per hour until it was repaired and back on line.
The cable came on line finally after Friday, Saturday. Sunday, and Monday at 3:00pm !!!!
I expect the backhoe guy got fired due to the 72 hours of repair fines !!!!!

Re: I can't Bear it
Not sure who all would be charged with fault. My first thoughts are, who is the backhoe operator's supervisor? Except in very small companies and owner-operator companies, usually someone above, who controls and directs the work orders would be making these calls in advance and ensure the marking before directing a backhoe operator to start digging.
I know in a modern sense seems here in society have gotten away from supervisor responsibility and blaming the employee, but with a huge mistake like that, I'd think heads were rolling starting with the 1st level supervisor on up.
Anyway that's what I think may have happened.

The midnight caller calls again..........
The "Midnight Caller" ghost story - True Grit edition 2.0
Did my regular glance out the kitchen window this morning only to see no standing bird feeder. Oh no!
Yesterday at Lowes Mark picked me up a bag of bird seed, the good stuff. Black Sunflower Seed. Got it home, went to pick it up and the top split dumping bird seed all over the trunk of my CR-V. What the H. Checking closely, mice had gotten into one corner and some Lowes employee had carefully taped it over using clear packing tape that we hadn't noticed. Varmint #1 strikes. Varmint #2 gets me again less than 16 hours later.
Left me a puddle. You don't suppose...…….
Built this one tough. Screwed and glued. Only damage is a broken roof retainer pin and a couple of perches. But I'm sure if he wanted to destroy it he could have.

So far at my new place its just fat gray squirrels in the feeders. They are learning about .17 cal pellets in the rear!..They've learned to only eat spillage on the ground !

My current crop of gray squirrels are either to dumb or unathletic to climb the pole to get to the seed. But in the past, I have found a bucket turned upside down did the trick.
My best home made bird feeder. Juice bottle with triangles cut at the bottom to dispense seed and a trap door at the top to fill. Also the one most susceptible to destruction.

Those holes in the plexiglass are from BB's. Just a couple of pumps on the old Daisy, enough to sting. From about 20 yards away, I don't think I ever hit one.
