Photo 1----Drawing the fuel out of my beautiful Goldberg "Shoestring" back in 1978, after cartwheeling the model across the grass.
What would really be thought of as a friendly sport model nowadays, the 1960's racer was a hand-full for me after learning to fly on Kevin's good-natured Kadet, and building a little time on my own Navigator. A painful lesson in that, just because a tali-dragger is on the ground, DOES NOT mean that it's finished flying.
The cartwheel was also a lesson in the need to "pin" control surface hinges, as it's right aileron has pulled loose. If this happened gradually over time, it'd eventually result in a violent "re-kitting" of the plane.
But, she flew again, and had a pretty long life as my dumb thumbs got educated.

That was a slick looking plane! Keeping radios functioning in the late 60's and 70's was almost as much work as building and finishing. Flying a hot plane was pretty tough back when.
I always enjoy the advertising pages you publish -- the prices are unbelievable. I noticed that a Lil Satan was $1.49 and a Lil Jumping Bean was $1.95. Brodak has a both a Lil Satan kit and a Lil Jumping Bean kit for $43.99 each. Prices have gone up like my waistline.

You ain't alone, brother!
My kit actually cost a bit more as I bought it from AHC in 1977, finishing it in the Spring of '78, but I was too lazy to look up an ad from then.
My first proportional radio (EK Logitrol Champion) served me well, until a friend put it in the ground. I do remember being concerned about it's servos' speeds. You could jam the stick one way or the other, and the control surface would just mosey in that direction, taking it's own sweet time.
None of that could be blamed for my busted Shoestring though...it was a simple case of the pilot letting his guard down WAY too early!

Kim I see in the ad that plane sold at $19.95.. what was included in that price, the airframe only, or some hardware and radio gear too? I have no feel of what the purchasing value of USD those days was.
BTW the cartwheeling does not seem to have maimed the plane!

Hey Andras,
The Shoestring came with a "hardware package" of screws, aluminum landing gear, and control horns. The rest was balsa.
Everything else was purchased separately, probably with good reason, as builder/pilots had their own passionate ideas about outfitting their planes. Mine had a lot of it's balsa parts "die-crushed", but that was just another thing that came with the times.
The cartwheel didn't hurt it like it could have, but if you look closely, you can see that the tail feathers are skewed. This broke the servo arms (it's strange-sounding now, but they were a rare commodity for me back then), and busted the servos trays loose inside the plane. Not a real big deal, but shut down my flying for the day.

There are two sets on Outer Zone: The original version as it appeared in M.A.N. and the kit sheets. I tried, but could not post the PDF's.

Re: The price you pay for "Dumb Thumbs".
I scaled/drew a set of templates from an old 1/2A CL Shoestring. Ron C. was interested, back when we had the forum Speed Contests.
Only God knows how old this model is..
It may be this Sterling kit?
my scaled drawings..
The Sterling kit-box states 20.5" span. My model's span is only slightly less; at 20.25"
Why not build a Super-Simple (SS) Shoestring.. to fly in your front yard?
