COX Super Sport Trainer
Lookie lookie what the postman has just delivered to my door !!!!!!
My childhood one-and-only COX plane a brother of which I bought from a UK ebayer now, i.e. 45 years later. The guy got this model around the same time as I in 1974-75, and has never flown it...just started the engine once and then put it aside for the following 45 years.
The Super Sport Trainer was the first - and last - COX model I have ever had. Back in the day I flew it in the open-air basketball field of the high school I went, to the astonishment of people living in the neighborhood, and to the surprise of our local basketball teams slipping on the asphalt where my engine left castor streaks (I still have the fragmented wing of it, but the engine flew away in a Lil Roughneck 3 or so years ago thanks to a short RX battery on board. Dammit...)
I cannot say how happy I am with this plane...only one elevator hinge broken that I will repair, and a brand new horse shoe back plate 049 reedy having only a few minutes on its clock, (all this for about 88 USD plus shipping!!!).
Wowwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww !!! I will revert once the refurbishment project is completed.

Nostalgia buy Andras, I have a few of them myself. Got some balsa kits up in the loft of model airplanes that I built and flew as a kid.
Contrary to popular opinion - you can go home again.
Congratulations on your purchase.

Thanks, Bob,
I have never thought to see and hold this in my hands again. I will restore - mainly wash and repair the elevator hinge - it and make her a shelf queen..I am not a CL guy anymore, fly RC instead, and would not take the chance of breaking it.
The engine has been cleaned already..practically new, nice tight cylinder/piston fit. These hand matched tight fit engines from the 60-s and 70-s in my experience break in just to reach the optimal fit then last very long...

I have many like that Andras that I will probably never fly. I just like to look at them. We are just caretakers after all.

You are right Bob, we fiddle with them and take care of them because they deserve.... and we deserve..jut too bad to even think of what their destiny will be after we are gone.

There is a science to repairing boxes and tape isn't involved.
A warm iron (a Monokote iron in addition to a standard iron works well) a damp paper towel and Elmer's white glue and/or CA is about all you need.

Iron out wrinkles with a warm/very warm iron, use the Monokote iron for hard to get at places using damp paper towels if necessary. Apply white glue to underside of lifted areas, clamp and let dry. Corners, apply white glue to each broken edge, remove excess with a paper towel. Clamp or push into a 90 degree corner and secure. Use wax paper if required. Other measurers as dictated by circumstances.
Most of the time it's best to leave previously applied tape (especially clear tape) in place. Removing it invariably pulls up the surface decoration.
Mostly just common sense.

Re: COX Super Sport Trainer
Thanks, Mauricio and Kim,
every time I get hold of a COX product I am amazed at how much care and precision went into these toys...nothing like just satisfying the short cycle, throw-away society consumerism of the recent decades.. dependable and lasting performance is what I prefer to competitive price for superficial quality and short life cycle. So I did not hesitate at all when entering the bidding for this beauty.

Re: COX Super Sport Trainer
Mine hangs over my workbench. I received mine as a b-day gift. My dad and I tried to fly it and it wouldn't get off the ground. It ran one time and it's been hanging ever since. We just had this conversation at our flying field in regards to certain Cox planes. My buddy Dan has a Rivets which is close to being flight ready, Rich has a Stuka and Skip with the P-40. We need to get these on video. I might just give it a whirl one more time.

Re: COX Super Sport Trainer
Gents thank you for your sympathy...it is really good to feel there are friends out there..the plane and its engine both cleaned up beautifully. The cylinder inside wall is as shiny as if it were made today. The honing marks are untouched. It must have run less than a full tank. The owner may have put it aside with the tank half full with fuel. The fuel line has rotted away and castor from the unspent fuel collected and condensed in the belly but was easy to wash off. I wish more and more such COX relics be saved from destruction.

Ken, mine flew well back in 1974-75 even if I only had straight mix of methanol and pharma castor to home-blend, no nitro in it. I cannot recall if it was a champ or not because I did not even have reference planes to compare it to. I know the Stuka a German classmate of mine (from whom I got my red postage stamp back plate reedy, still the queen of my ancient COX engines) had did not survive too many attempts to fly..but the Super Sport Trainer was good enough to hurl me into the CL modelling hobby back then.
