More fixer uppers only in the "Train" department.
More worst of the worst. But these don't see the damage of C/L airplanes unless you drop them from a height of 25'.
"Won" another on ebay last night. Snipped at the last second by someone that thought he would like it more than I would. Not so. My proxy was high enough to ward off interlopers. Cost me another nine bucks running the total minus shipping to $21 and change.
Some would think - not worth it. But I need the parts totaling to more than $40 if bought individually.
But, I will probably restore it as it's the lighted edition.
It will look good on the shelf.

I build them Eric,
Started out using lumber imported from New Zealand but that got expensive so I switched to 1X2X8' "furring" strips from Lowes @ about $9 package of 6. A quarter of the price of the NZ stuff. But at a cost, I had to rip them down to 1/2" sections to match. Then gave up on that building them as received. They are all backed with 2X4' luan and screwed not nailed together.

They are all HO, 1:87. But I left most of them with a taller bottom shelf so I could display S scale if I ever get into those. For Lionel, you would need 1X3" Lionel being somewhat wider.
I did not do a good job on these. A good job would have included a dado joint for the shelves and everything clamped and glued together then sanded and stained. To lazy anymore. My thinking - "It's about the locomotives, not the displays." At least that was my excuse.

New stuff, yes. Diesels, yes. But shopping like Eric did you can find Lionel steam locomotives to be quite cheap. Mark keeps sending me ads for Lionel on facebook that tempts.
HO can be expensive too - DCC/DC locomotives by MTH, BLI, Rapido and others of that ilk run from $350 - $750. That is about the going price for a Cox Mercedes in nice but used condition.
I think most of my HO collection could be had for about the price of three or four Cox Mercedes tether cars.

Phrugal Phred-- If you use a 2020 Lionel catalog as a benchmark, no question about it; you'd spend enough to build an R/C turbojet to build any kind of layout approaching impressive. On the other hand, there's tons of HO stuff at yard sales, flea markets etc. real cheap. But yah, you can definitely whip out a scratch built Stuntman 23 with a used Baby Bee for under $40.00 if you know what you're doing.

Lionel = $1500,00 my HO Rivarossi E8 received today $40
E8 $40 (offer), B&O cars $65 (offer). I seldom pay asking prices. Cars were a steal, E8 not so much.

Bob, seeing your Pennsy GG-1 brings back some good memories. There's a large dam near my house where I would sneak back and fish off of. Dozens of us would sit high above the water fishing the water below the spill over. The GG-1's would be pulling freight on the other side of the river. While all of us would see them daily, we all would stop and watch it. I recently went to the Strasburg Railroad Museum to see dozens of old steamers, they also have early electrics with a newly painted GG-1 inside.

I have a friend of fifty years or so who may be the worlds foremost railfan. Highly intelligent fellow with a memory of anything related to railroads. He has done the Hobo thing and travelled throughout Europe.
I asked him once, what was his favorite locomotive. He immediately replied - the GG-1. I was astounded. A pure electric, not steam, no Union Pacific Big Boy or Y6 Mallet? Nope, the GG-1, best locomotive of all time.

Yes, it's an early Athearn fuel tank car, one you have to put together yourself.
It was a toss in with the passenger cars, seller told me he had included a surprise. Also B&O. Surprised me as I had made him an offer well under his asking price for the passenger cars. Trains were not their (husband and wife) main items so I think they just wanted to get rid of it.

Now that's cool. An unassembled train car in kit form. Never seen that before, ok I don't know much about trains at all, but I never knew they offered that. Nice.

There is a fellow on the modeltrainforum......(add dot com to be a guest or member)
who finds, builds, and reviews dozens of the railroad kits....cars, buildings, bridges, trestles.....like you, I never knew a lot of RR items came in kit form....
https://www.modeltrainforum.com/showthread.php?t=169153
I seem to infer from his posts that this gave the builder the ability to select proper colors and decals or stencils and even a wide variety of optional parts to be period or regional specific....SCALE MODEL DIORAMA FOLKS ARE PRETTY PRECISE CREATURES
MY ROUND THE TREE train displays at christmas uses Lincoln Log buildings....they are about right scale for Lionel 0-27 train sets...

Model train kits have been around for a long time. These are from the 70's - 90's Both cars and locomotives. Athearn, Bev Bel, Roundhouse being the major suppliers. Roundhouse used to put out wooden kits that were spectacular but difficult to put together. I just got through putting together some Boston and Maine coaches and box cars mainly to flesh out my displays. Sometimes not fun. Today, most locomotives and cars come fully assembled.

Re: More fixer uppers only in the "Train" department.
The "Rubber Band" thread drove me to dig out what I have for model locomotives; both powered and dummies. I have a small box of model-railroad stuff that I've had.. for a longer time than any of my Cox glow-engines. The box and its contents has managed to escape the fate of being discarded or lost, through several cold-storage moves/relocations.
I hadn't checked for decades.. but was pretty sure that there were a pair of matching (Santa Fe) HO-scale F9's that I've had for probably 40 years. I'm not sure of the manufacturer.. but "Model-Power" comes to mind. "Life-Like" was another popular name. I think that these diesels may have originally come with a small freight set that was being offered at a local department store.. probably "King's" in Franklin, MA; circa 1984.
Here are the F9's
They used to haul the mail..
A bit of road-rash.. but I just haven't been able to part with these two.
The other locos in the box are lucky to share company with them.
I actually have a O-guage dummy by Lionel. I'm not sure where it came from.
another HO Santa Fe diesel.. is this an Alco?
one more little HO Santa Fe switcher and caboose..
