Cox Engine of The Month
16D motor for a Cox Chaparral 2E

16D motor for a Cox Chaparral 2E
Cox Engineering sent me here to ask, I realize it's a gas engine forum, but they insisted that you guys might be able to help me.
I am looking for a Cox 16D motor, these were somewhat unique in that they had a larger endbell bushing to accommodate a fulcrum arrangement that operated the "flipper" wing just like the real car.
I have been collecting parts for this build for 20 years from yard sales and whatever, so the history of the motor (other than it's a Cox) is a mystery, the motor runs, but heats up and I would shut it down to keep from frying it. The correct motor is on the left, the one on the right is a 36D..of which, there are multitudes. I have even tried to find someone to rebuild the motor but no luck so far.
Any leads or clues would be sincerely appreciated..sorry for the interruption

Re: 16D motor for a Cox Chaparral 2E
So,
I see several 16D motors on Ebay at the moment. I am not sure if they contain the special piece for the spoiler though.
Chapparel 2-E I assume is the only model that uses this motor?

I don't know much about these motors but these have the mounting tits like the one you show .. https://www.ebay.com/itm/Vintage-Lot-of-7-Cox-and-other-brands-of-Slot-Car-Motors-1-24-Scale-1-32/223499009874?hash=item3409943f52:g:4EwAAOSwOsdcvlKM And there is anouther one that seems the guy may bee a Machiniest ( you could contact the seller ) about a rebuild ?? https://www.ebay.com/itm/1-24-Cox-slot-car-1-large-can-motor-and-1-Cox-large-can-Nascar-motor/333188411290?hash=item4d9393af9a:g:FNQAAOSwYpVcXc7I

Re: 16D motor for a Cox Chaparral 2E
I was an early teen at the hight of slot car hobby, there was several 1/24 scale tracks close by. We really got into it, built our own chassis out of brass tube and my 12 yr old brother would rewind armatures for more Rs so can't be hard to rewind a motor. We knew the shop owners so he would pull out a box of motors and power em up, you could tell the faster ones by sound and we got those.
Saturday night were races and we cleaned up consistently. I found a 1/24 track 100 miles away about 10 years ago and made the drive with my Son a lot, getting back into tuning and go fast again. They had wing body cars that were so fast you couldn't see em, some burned on track from over tuning.
I was having a blast until the track shut down, Bummer!! If I was rich I would build my own track. Great hobby, miss it!!
I found a vid of the wing cars, 2 second laps!!

Yes, I have researched D bay considerably, those motors, unfortunately do not have the large brass bushing that is needed for the wing attachment.

Re: 16D motor for a Cox Chaparral 2E
Hi blacksheep-1, There is a slot-car facility in Ashland, MA called Modelville Hobby. Richard Payne is the owner. The shop should be open today from 1-6 pm EST. Hours are Tue.-Fri. 4PM-9PM and Sat./Sun. 1PM-6PM.

There is also an "active" Facebook page;

Richard may be able to help you. I have a Cox "Cucaracha" that I took some photos of. Not sure if the Cucaracha used the 16D motor though. My Grandfather gave me this car a long time ago. I have run it at Modelville Hobby. Richard hooked me up with a new set of rear hubs/tires.. as the original Cox tires had become brittle with age. I have the originals with knock-off hubs saved with my slot-car stuff.
Best of luck!!

Could you not just dissassemble the current motor and replace the armature and brushes with parts from another 16D?
Those can motors pop apart pretty easily. Plus you might just find it only needs a good cleaning and lube to reduce the friction on the armature that is causing the overheating. All it takes is a bit of hair or carpet fibers to bind an armature.

Re: 16D motor for a Cox Chaparral 2E
Roddie, thanks for the suggestion, I will be in touch with him
Cribbs, it doesn't quite work that way, I've tried that route and the armature is apparently different from most 16D in the length
Crnkbndr, yes, that's the one, although mine is the "cheap" version, that one probably has the magnesium chassis, mine has the stamped LaCucaracha style motor , similar to the one Roddie posted, it's basically the same chassis with an arm coming from it to activate the wing, it also "rocks" in the chassis so it can move the wing, hence all the issues trying to find the right pieces.
You've given me some ideas, so let me pursue those for now. I was out of town for a few days, so it took me awhile to respond, but thanks for the imput.

My pleasure. Best of luck to you. Please let us know if you're able to restore the Chaparral's operation. I for one would love to see the car.. running or not.
Re: 16D motor for a Cox Chaparral 2E
How this menagerie works, is thus.
The Cox 16D motor has a large endbell bushing, the plastic bellcrank fits on that bushing. (motor has no pinion for demo)
This goes into the chassis and the unobtainable wire link runs off the bell crank, the bellcrank indexes on a piece of plastic that is attached to the chassis to serve as up and down stops for the wing. (again, the motor is missing the pinion gear)
The unobtainable steel rod runs through the body and attaches to this small hole under the wing, when you gas it, the wing straightens out, when you le toff, the wing goes into an angle.

Re: 16D motor for a Cox Chaparral 2E
Pretty neat little setup, you would think it would work the exact opposite in that the wing would tilt down when throttle is applied to provide more downforce at speed.
That rod looks relatively easy to replicate. Not that you would ever need to, but it may help someone else down the line if you made a copy of it.
How is the search coming along?
Ron

I was thinking the same thing Ron , thats is pretty neat for a slot car to have that tecnologie. Thanks for the view and explanation of the wing to motor
