Taught my son a few things tonight...
AND we had fun. He has seen me play with them, but never has himself, I thought it's time to change that. He first took the 051 off the mount and took the gas tank off. Then he put the tank on the other motor. He took the head and cylinder off to remove the throttle ring and reassembled it. I showed him all the parts and how they work. Next I showed him how to get it started, showing him how to flip the prop. I set the needle valve to 2.5 turns and primed it, had him clip the ignitor and he flipped it. It ran pretty well and it was his first run himself. Anyway, I thought I would share the moment with you all.

As much time as I spend on the internet, I'd like to keep him off as long as I can, no offense....

I understand. None taken.
Re: Taught my son a few things tonight...
Golden memories for both your and your son.
I remember doing the same thing with my son at about the same age. Those times often just don't happen they need to be created by a thoughtful Dad.
My son took to the hobby and pursued it up until college. Then came a career profession, marriage and his own family all of which have taken him in new directions yet the bond between us has never been stronger.

Those are the things to remember Travis. Hope I could enjoy this hobby in the future with my (yet to be born) kids. And i cross my thumbs that they will not choose computer games above modelling.
I could accept playing with Lego (Still like that myself )

Cool,
I hope you both had great fun, the minimum age for here is 13 I believe.

Kids largely live what they learn at home and the time spent with their parents. Learning comes from examples rather than lectures. Getting involved in your children's activities is an essential part of being an effective parent.

I feel the most useful thing I learned in school were my social skills.
Re: Taught my son a few things tonight...
The big thing is that he has ADD, which seems to run in the family. For the most part I can't seem to get him interested in a hobby of any kind. His grades have been a lot better this year, but his math has been down.

Travis:
While I can hardly dismiss ADD (Attention Deficit Disorder), as a retired high school teacher, I can tell you that parental example and patience can be a very effective preventative rather than relying on medications.
All too often parents are quick to slap a label on a condition and then lay on the meds.

I try to teach him how to cope without meds but my wife and school pushed..... I myself tried meds a few years ago and I didn't like it.

Well unfortunately that is a common attitude to many things,
Instead of a lifestyle change many people expect substance to cure them.

No one ever said that being a EFFECTIVE parent was easy. (emphasis added)

Well said SD, I went through that with both of my boys,as did my parents with me actually. I didn`t get meds,if they even had them back then;but I sure did get the lectures, they just said I was hyperactive and didn`t pay attention, want to ,or care about school
So when I was 9yrs old we all had a meeting, and Mom and Dad pointed out that they had no trouble getting me to pay attention at all and of course I piped in with the time Dad taught me to "drive" the snowmobile I learned just fine. However I did make him nervous that the speedometer ran out of numbers way too fast when I was "driving" ,just like it did with him "driving"
The same applied with my boys,I simply laid it on the line,I teach more interestingly and in a way that they are participating and the school teachers did not;to educate a kid you must understand kids thinking.
