My fist RC plane and what it taught me
My first RC plane, long ago, was a "foamie" Piper Cub which required little more than painting. Powered by Fox .15 RC with three channels it was the "quick build" that is what I so much desired (and later regreted).
Then to the flying field. The plane gently ROG'd and rose into the "wild blue". During the process of construction, I hadn't noticed that the plane lacked wing struts as none were shown of the plans. After I attained the altitude, I did a power drive toward the ground.
Upom pulling out the planes wings, lacking struts, assumed a "prayer" position which augered the plane straight into the ground. End of plane and some of the radio equipment.
As I dug the trusty Fox out of the ground, I had time to reflect upon what I had done.
I had defied the "laws of nature" and common sense. (Nature's laws are self-enforcing)
But from such experiences wisdom is gained. In a later version of the same plane I added re-inforced packing tape to the underside of each wing to serve as "struts" and once again climbed into the skies wiser for the experience.

This is my first RC plane 2 Channel and cox 0.49 35 years ago.
I learned a lot since the first time throwing RC.
Is still a combatant.

Where and why struts.
The wing is tied with Rubbers.

Most of the old models of aircraft wings tied to the joints.
If then you'd break and the plane.

Struts allow the wing loading to be better distribed along the wing rather that concentrated of the top of the fuse. My current Super Cub aluminum-tube struts are secured firmly to the fuse and wing by anchored screws not rubber bands.
