Cox Engine of The Month
Cool Bonus KK Needle Valve

Cool Bonus KK Needle Valve
I bought a batch of various old glow engines this past weekend that included 6 interesting Coxes(including the original Babe Bees in blister packs from the other thread) and some well used OS's and such that were mostly of little interest to me. It was an all-or-nothing deal. Included in the tub o' engines was this Kustom Kraftsmanship TD .049 NVA. It is still in the original package and stapled to a yellowed handsigned $5 gift certificate from Joe Klause. I thought this was pretty cool and decided to share it here since some of you might get a kick out of it.

Nice
What OS engines did you get. I may be interested especially if any are steel fins.

Re: Cool Bonus KK Needle Valve
I was getting all excited about the $5 discount on my next engine until I saw that.

Go ahead and send me the certificate with the NVA attached and I will reimburse for the lost $5 plus another $2 as a gesture of good will

Kirn-Kraft KK-06
Did Kustom Kraftsmanship and Kirn-Kraft operate during the same time period? I found this NVA in a parts-engines bag that I scored last December at a hobby shop in Sturbridge, MA.
I'm assuming that "both" of our aftermarket NVA's feature a "finer-thread" than the Cox OEM part, for optimal tuning when using a pressurized (bladder) fuel delivery.
Your "KK" part/reference #174 NVA is stated to have 128 threads-per-inch.
I don't have any specs. on the Kirn-Kraft NVA

KariFS, thanks but I'll suffer the loss in a dignified manner.
Roddie, not sure about the timeline but they sure look similar, eh? It has also made me wonder what other tricks Klause did to those KK TD .049s he sold back in the day besides adding his NVA and how much of a premium he charged for them over a stock engine.

From the Aerotools web page:
The needle and plastic seal look like they are from a product engine
This Tee Dee has been modified for free flight models. A chromed crankshaft reduces friction and a flooding line was added to the carburetor to stop the engine in fractions of a second. The backplate has a tap to pressurize the fuel tank, the head has been reworked and the enlarged venturi is fitted with a fine thread needle valve. The blue anodized spinner was added to make the engine with its internal differences stand out from the crowd.

Have you seen the images of his 1993 catalog that I posted here a few years ago? I've been meaning to "scan" all the pages of that catalog to make them easier to read.
Here's pages 3 and 4.. which describe the upgrades available to the Tee Dee engines .020 thru .09 in 1993.
Re: Cool Bonus KK Needle Valve
I have one KK TD. I know he raised the cylinder due to the shims under it. This was to close some SPI down and to index the cylinder. He would also lap the piston/cylinder and mine also is setup for pressure with the ball check blue anodized backplate.
