Liquidation sale? Empty Liquidation sale?

Got these on ebay a few days ago. The seller is engmag. Looks like he's Tim Dannel, co-author of the Cox model engine publication. Is he liquidating or is he just selling off un-needed engines?
Is the .049 just an ordinary engine? Seems to have a weird exhaust cutout.Liquidation sale? Fox_0411

The .049 is the FAI Special. I don't know what makes it "special", but it seems to be worth more than the standard Fox .049.

Tim has been selling engines from deceased MECA member Doug Wendt. He is also selling some engines from his magnificent collection. He has a complete McCoy collection, a complete K&B Veco collection, and many s foreign engines. He was a personal friend of Dickinson McCoy, Ludwig Kading, Clarence Lee, and many other engine men.

The Fox 049 FAI used a different crankcase, crankshaft, and cylinder. The crank was 3/16 DIA instead of 1/4. That allowed a larger gas passage. The cylinder had special transfer and exhaust porting. You can see the trapezoidal ports in the picture. It was and is a very special engine. Doug Martin in Colorado is still selling examples made from mostly original Fox parts.

Thanks for all the informative replies.  Now I need to find a regular Fox .049, a start to another engine collection LOL!
My first engine larger than .049 ci was a Fox .10 that I bought from a classmate in 1967.  I built a 27'' wingspan  P-40 Warhawk slab wing profile. Didn't know any better and flew it on 25 foot lines. after about 30 laps I lost sight of the plane from being dizzy. I heard the engine stop when it buried itself into the dirt. My biggest engine was now in little pieces. Have been looking for another Fox .10 since.
So far I have found about 5 from ebay.

You're off to a great start with the .07 R/C and the FAI! I think there's about a dozen or so of the Fox .047/.07 engines to collect. First designed to power the plastic 'RTF' Comet models.

The earlier ones were Comet and had the name ground off. They weren't ever marked FOX at that point. Of course, any engine that came from a Comet RTF would still have the Comet logo, but those engines which were "retrieved" from Comet after the falling-out (I don't know the exact circumstances) were modified by FOX to give them a point of difference. To my knowledge, this involved removal of the logo, angling the top of the intake and removal of a small lug under the front of the crankcase (the purpose of which I have no idea).

They're not too rare, but fun to collect because there were so many variations. John Krickel nail3d down the story in his old 049 newsletter. I think I repeat3d it with pictures for Mark's Yahoo forum. Maybe you can post it here Mark?
