2017 Cox engine tach race
Gents,
I am designating this thread to be the official thread to discuss the upcoming tach race. With Mark Boeson's blesssing I am going to be the CD. This is a big responsibility to say the least. What I would like to do within this thread is to nail down contest specs. Maximum participation is encouraged. Please be vocal and let me know what you want. This is what I propose:
March 2017 contest date
Unlimited class
Mouse Class
Beginner Class
TD unlimited class.
All classes will be .049/.051 displacement.
I will contact major suppliers for prizes. Let me know if this works for you guys.
Prop for Mouse, Unlimited and TD APC 4.75x4
Beginner Cox grey 5x3
Fuel Sig or Cox 35%
Disclaimer: If you build an engine to compete you must accept the consequences, it's an all out race. Don't shy away because you are worried about your engine. Go big or go home!
Ron

Pick the fuel and prop you want to work with and the specs are done.

Re: 2017 Cox engine tach race
I like the February date. The Super Bowl is Feb. 5th, so either on or after that would be my preferred choice, however Jan. 28/29 would be okay too if Mark prefers the traditional date.
I will be testing and tuning with Cox 35% fuel, and I like your prop choices. I'll probably enter an Unlimited reed valve engine, and/or a Mouse.

I like it. Good fuel and prop choice, should make for some good numbers. I'll send at least one entry.

Works for me!
My thought with the week before was so that it doesn't interfere with NFL fans, the week after sounds just as good...it's our Super Bowl!

Ron Cribbs
Thanks so much for taking on this daunting task
Time for me to actually get off my butt and enter... BUT that would break my total procrastination history ever since CEF started Tach Races.... I sure hate to lose a 100% status point
Way too much trouble for the Official starter and RPM recorder as well as ten other hats that one guy (hopefully 2 this year if Kim can help)....has to wear---
BUT I think an all out TeeDee unlimited should be run on Bladder
Again Ron I do not think you need to fuss with he rules to provide for pressure runs....On the other hand the TRUE top rpm is only seen that way on most modded TeeDees
Now where did I hide the .051599 Tee Dee that hit 24,900 RPM on the bench when I was investigating the so called high performance cranks
Nah....can't send that one as it will never start on suction

I can easily do pressure runs however, every engine would have to have a fine thread NVA and that may run some people off.

I'll post rules. Just a little too busy right now to sit down and put this all together. Expect something to pop up by EOM.

Re: 2017 Cox engine tach race
Can I please suggest that we just leave it up to Ron and Mark to work out the conditions/classes? If everyone starts making suggestions then it will get complicated. It'll be enough of a job just keeping up with the two main classes suggested. Personally (here I am breaking my own rule ) I think Tee Dee classes should be a separate event. Keep this one to its original format of reedies.
Not sure I'll get an engine over there this time. My "last time" Mouse winner is still sitting it its box having not been run since the race. I think I'll let it rest on its laurels. Work is just nuts, play doesn't happen much lately.
Rod.

Re: 2017 Cox engine tach race
A Redcap will feed a stock NV just fine. I've seen Bandit do it on several occasions. But I'm only interested in seeing how fast I can make a reedy on suction can go.Cribbs74 wrote:I can easily do pressure runs however, every engine would have to have a fine thread NVA and that may run some people off.

Amen. Let the guy running the contest come up with the rules and then build something to suit.

Re: 2017 Cox engine tach race
Ok, so as promised I am going to nail down the rules, I am going to have to push this into March because I am on the road most of Feb.
So the Contest date is officially 4-5 March 2017
Classes are as follows:
Mouse
TD unlimited
Bee Unlimited
Stock (reed valve)
Unlimited means any combination of parts or reworking of internals. As long as displacement remains .049/.051
Mouse class will strictly abide by the Paul Gibeault mouse class rules. Found here https://www.coxengineforum.com/t753-the-revised-2011-gibeault-mouse-race-program
Stock is just that. Stock Cox (or new Cox replacement) parts only. However, one may play around with fits and finishes to provide the best running engine as possible. This class is reed valve only. Cylinders are limited to #1 or #2's and heads must be stock low compression heads
Fuel will be SIG 35% all classes.
Prop will be APC 4.75x4 for all unlimited classes.
Prop for Stock class will be Cox 5x3 grey.
PM me for my address.
All engines sent must include return postage.
Good luck guys and get cracking!!!
Ron

What plug will be used in the stock Class?
What class will the Space Hopper run In?
Looking forward to a good contest Ron!

I updated the rules as I was a little vague concerning the stock class. To answer your question a Space Hopper can run in stock or Unlimited if you are inclined to modify it from stock.

Is anyone entering the tach race this Year? There doesn't seem to be any buzz.

I thought I was but I haven't done anything to prepare or even send an engine I have that is already built. Kinda forgot due to the lack of noise.

Partly my fault, been very busy with work. I have yet to hit up Bernie and Matt. I'll make time for that in the next couple days. You guys are right though it has been quiet since I first posted about it. Usually the buzz keps the thread going so it has me a little worried.

Re: 2017 Cox engine tach race
With less tHan 4 weeks until the official run date, will there realistically be a Race? I have 2 engines ready, but flying season is coming up and I don't know whether to spend time on my unlimited.

Re: 2017 Cox engine tach race
I hope so !! i have 2 at this time ready but am concerned about the Stock (reed valve) class i have a Baby Bee P40 three pieces pis/rod and i don't think that will compete with a Space Hopper ?? Is it going to any stock against any other Stock engine ??
