So...what does the first Beech Staggerwing have in common with the Space Shuttle?
They both used a split rudder as a speed brake !!!!

No argument here!
The planes were packed too tightly for me to get a good photo of it's lines.

There was one that visited our airport on a fairly regular basis. Our airport manager was supposed to be trying to sign the owner for an appearance at our yearly airshow, but it never happened.

Of course, when these elegant ships first appeared, I thought the skys would eventually be full of them, and THAT never happened either...

Yep...though sometimes, museums can be a bit painful---our ole A-12 buddy down in Huntsville could use a new coat of paint...

That split rudder on the Staggerwing would be a head-turner on an R/C scale model for sure, and doable too with modern programmable radios.

Beautiful planes, all of them, I suppose expensive too at the time with the complicated structure and "luxurious" interiors.

There used to be a green C-17L there that belonged to paul mantz in the 30's. He snap rolled it 20 times in the movie, "Women in the Wind". Cool.
