'On the Road Again'...the 2016 Pietenpol Reunion at Brodhead, Wisconsin...The Video
So, for the first time since 2002 or there about's, I'm headed north to the Pietenpol Fly-In at the little airport just outside Brodhead, Wisconsin (actually think it's been renamed 'The Hatz/Pietenpol Fly-In' to include the 'baby-WACO-like biplanes').
A decade and a half ago, the whole year revolved around this event, with the EAA Convention at Oshkosh occasionally included.
My old plane won't be going this time, but maybe next year. Not as much adventure dragging a camper trailer, but also not as much planning and weather-dodging and worrying about hail storms.
Maybe next year, me and Ole Yeller will make the run...
Hope to take a few bizillion photos and vidoes, along with visiting with some of my old buds.
Hopefully Cool Stuff to Follow !!!!

Kim,
Enjoy the trip! Wisconson can be absolutely beautiful this time of year. All those sweet planes will just make it that much better.

What size APC do you suppose that is?
I used to date an airline pilot who built the majority of her private hours in a pietenpol.

Now this would be a sweet event to attend! I'm living through you this week my friend. Stay cool!
Re: 'On the Road Again'...the 2016 Pietenpol Reunion at Brodhead, Wisconsin...The Video
Mostly just assorted photos.
I was very happy to see a Piet that met with some grief when we flew into Oshkosh 1999. Mitch Burns had just finished his plane, flying it up from Alabama.
We landed on the north south taxiway (a normal practice during the convention), with Mitch behind me, when the wake turbulence from a DC-3 on the parallel runway drifted across and caught him just as he touched down. The resulting hard-core ground loop tore the gear from Mitche's Piet. He was OK, but his poor little plane was hauled to the 'back lot' on a flatbed. We helped him take it apart and he eventually got it shipped home.
The plane has a new owner (actually three in a partnership), who told me that Mitch is now finishing a gyro copter of some sort. Anyway, more photos:
The Piet today
1999

-------------------------------------------
A terrible photo capture of FiFi...the B-29 'snuck up on me' while I was messing with my camera's settings, and the white balance went crazy when I tried to catch the bomber flying by...
A bunch more to follow !!!

Re: 'On the Road Again'...the 2016 Pietenpol Reunion at Brodhead, Wisconsin...The Video
THANKS!
Sorry I haven't included more info with the photos...been free-loading WiFi from a McDonalds in Brodhead, and kept forgetting to go there with a fully charged battery!
I'm headed back home now, to yard mowing and assorted other over-due chores that should have been attended to before I left. Gonna do a video (after I finish the Sig Fly-In edition) of the Piets and a lot of the other great stuff that buzzes around this little Wisconsin airport.

Whoa there Kim! Looks like you're having more fun than allowed by law! What a way to get the airplane adrenaline flowing. Great pictures and I'm sure you'll explain the white bungee corded landing gear and how the green plane attached itself to the airplane magnet on the runway! ......and I thought a 11x6 wood prop was expensive......
Can't wait for the rest of the stories...
THANKS.

Thanks Marleysky!
I'm not sure what the word 'esoteric' means, and haven't Googled it to find out because I'm afraid it might not apply to 'Re-Piet', and I like calling it that! 'Re-Piet's pilot apparently didn't see the runway marker and taxied into it, catching the right wheel and standing it on it's nose. It's prop was damaged along with it's air cleaner and carburetor box and some of the cowling.
The hazard of most tail draggers is lack of visibility directly ahead, so this kind of accident can happen fairly easily. I once watched a Cessna 185 launch a saw-horse barricade twenty feet in the air from where it marked some fresh concrete. You've got to taxi/weave...checking from side to side as you go, and a lapse at the wrong moment can ruin your whole day.
Luckily, if you're gonna damage a classic plane, Brodhead is the place to do it, and 'Re-Piet' was back in the air the next day...repaired and with a new prop!
Also, the B-29 returned, with a 'Little Friend', nipping at it's heels...
I was told that one of the 29's crew is a member of the field's EAA Chapter.

Someday I would love a ride in an open cockpit plane. Maybe if you get yours going again you can make my dream come true Kim!

If I can get it going, you'll be welcome for a ride. You get up this way, I MIGHT be able to wrangle you a ride in a PT-19!

Great stuff Kim. The "Piet" reminds me a lot of my late brother's Luton Minor.
Sadly, after his death his wife sold it- I would have loved to keep it in the family. Unlike the Piet it is only a single place, so I never had the opportunity for a ride. He must have enjoyed the "wind in the hair" experience because he flew that puppy thousands of miles to shows & fly-ins.

Another great thread Kim. Love this pictures but the video really brought the event to life. The background noise, the conversations, but especially the engine sounds. All fantastic.
The highlights for me were "Re-piet" despite the unfortunate nose-over the nose detail itself is a work of art, how nicely done. The flyover by Fifi the B-29 and the Mustang. The maintenance and operating costs for those two birds must be extravagant. The PT-17? replica? The wheels and tires, everything from balloon to WW1 types. The formation flying, well heck, the whole darn video. Nice editing too.

Pietenpol is my favourite experimental airplane
I made one réplica 1/3 scale 15 years ago.

Thanks guys, I really appreciate all your comments. It was a great time, and just like Tony's being ready for the next S.M.A.L.L. Fly-In, I'm looking forward to this event rolling around again.
" The PT-17? replica?

Bob, think the plane you were may have been the Fleet Biplane.
