Cox Engine of The Month
It's been hard...

It's been hard...
As some of you may have heard, my grandma had to go into the hospital at the beginning of this month. She had a urinary tract infection that we got her antibiotics for but her condition continued to worsen. After getting to the hospital, we found out that the UTI had cleared but her condition (confusion and shakes) were coming from high blood calcium. After a week of testing and scratching possible reasons off the list, it was down to lymphoma. The cancer doctor said that it was an aggressive lymphoma and that it advances so fast that symptoms usually only show once its at stage 4. They said that scans shows that the lymphoma had spread just about everywhere and that because of her existing conditions and her age, treatment would be a painful failure. Several doctors came in and pushed towards quality of life over length of life. Without treatment, she will be gone in a few weeks to about 2 months and with treatment (only a light treatment as the full treatment regimen would not be suitable for her) she could live 4-6 months...that is only if there were no complications with the treatment. It's an absolute shock, as she was pretty much okay just a few months ago. After talking it over with her and the rest of the family, we have decided that quality of life was the better option. We watched her sister go through a fight with a rare blood cancer a few years ago and it was brutal. For about 3 days now, she is now back home here in hospice care (getting everything set up and her back home is another story...). She is mentally herself, can't really get out of bed just because she had spent too much time laying and not moving while in the hospital. She absolutely doesn't want to die and can't believe that she has cancer. It really is hard to believe. There really is no saying how long she has, everyone has been praying for a miracle.
Anyway, that's why I haven't been on the forum too much lately. I know I have a Engine of the Month Black Lynx .049 drawing to do, that only takes a few minutes of setup to get done though. I really want to get the World's Smallest Traveling Engine out and about before the summer has a chance to get away from us.

Sorry to hear, and wish you and your family the best through these hard times. I have an idea as to what you're going through, as a couple of weeks ago I lost my closest aunt to cancer as well. Anyways, take care again and do what you have to, as we'll all still be here for you.

Re: It's been hard...
Jacob. I know what you're going through after losing my mother to cancer last year. It's a horribly painful time for everyone involved, not just the patient, and it messes up your mind a whole lot, so don't worry about your jobs with the forum for a while- thay can wait. Focus on family time for now. While a miracle probably won't happen, I will be praying that your final time can be joyful & memorable and that both the physical and emotional pain can be well managed. Life can be rough, but that's life.

Re: It's been hard...
Jacob, take all the time you need to be with your grandma and family, you will forever have memories of your time together. quality of life is a much better choice than offering to become a experiment for Dr.s to try "something" that might work, and making her life a living hell. My Dad found out he had cancer the first week of January with a 6 -12 week life without treatment or 6 to 9 months with a "new" chemo treatment. It was horrible. He passed away Febuary 27th, after 6 weeks of hell on earth, due to the chemo.
The only good thing was he told me to quit smoking, so I wouldn't have to go thu what he was...and I did. You and your family will be in our prayers.

Jacob,
Really sorry to hear about her. I hope she gets to enjoy her last few months with your family. Hopefully she will accept the diagnosis soon. It will make her last weeks better. I lost my mother in 2014 in similar circumstances. We found out she had terminal cancer, and she was gone about four months later. Thankfully, she accepted it and was able make peace with it before she passed. Hope your grandmother finds peace as well.

Re: It's been hard...
Jacob, brother
We here know exactly what you are experiencing and our daily prayers include your family
Be strong, loving, gentle with ALL of your family-- the next weeks or months are hard on all of you
Your grandmother will transition through all the stages...denial, anger etc...
Take a few minuets each day to relax a bit and de-stress so you can deal with your own grief and frustration...this will help your family through the end of life stages they are witnessing

Re: It's been hard...
Thanks guys.
Yeah its been tough. Just lost my grandpa in October of 2014 and to add onto that the vet killed our dog shortly after. We've been living together for many years so I've always been very close them. Lots of family coming around to see her which she likes. She's alright though, happy to be home.

Re: It's been hard...
A few days ago her condition worsened and she became unresponsive, likely due to the elevated calcium levels. Being in hospice care, the hospice nurses wouldn't do anything about it and said that she would likely be gone in a matter of days if not hours. My aunt and uncle (her son) stayed overnight last night. Well, she passed this morning...within an hour window of time that everyone was asleep.
She's in a better place now, especially with whats going on around the country and world today...a much better place.

It's hard on those who are left behind to grieve, but better for her. Trusting that she's ushered into God's presence & comfort. We'll all be praying for strength for you & your family Jacob.

Re: It's been hard...
Thanks for all the support guys.
The 12th was her birthday so we rented a newly built shelter/warming house in a nearby park and had a "celebration of life" kind of deal instead of a funeral. She really didn't want a traditional funeral and she wanted to have some kind of luncheon. We had a local long time pizza/pasta place called Mama's Pizza cater it with mostaccioli, meatballs, sausage and bread. She would've loved it.
