The Plywood Hornet...And...The Canadians are in Town
Can't remember if I've posted about this before so, if so, please forgive any repetition...I tend to lose track of stuff lately!
Our local airshow date (May 11th) is closing in, and it actually looks like one of our more 'grassroots projects' WILL be finished in time (I was starting to wonder).
One of the acts scheduled to appear is a Canadian F-18 demonstration team, along with our good friends the Canadian Snowbirds. I'm starting to think that, if not for the Canucks, we couldn't have any military acts!
Since we'd already built a Baby Snowbird a couple years ago, it seemed only proper to give it a companion in the form of a Baby Hornet, also marked in Canadian livery.
The project has now been turned over to our very capable artist, and sometimes receptionist, Morgan, who's charged with painting the beast, AND doing some restoration work on the Baby Snowbird's paint as well.
Taxi-testing the F-18
Today, Morgan decided that the Baby Hornet should be brought into our airport lobby to allow her to cover the phones and, start etching the paint scheme on our plywood fighter. It looked a lot smaller out in the hangar, and barely fit as we tack-assembled the thing in front of her desk.
Morgan etches the outlines of the Baby Hornet's markings.
She's also responsible for the Hornet's crazy-realistic instrument panel.
SO, this time next week, it ought to REALLY be looking sharp, and we already have golf cart owners offering to tow it around the ramp on airshow day (I'm sure that it's rumored mission as a beer cooler caddy has NOTHING to do with that)
Anyway, 'till more goofyness happens...Hornet Builder Kim...signing off.......

Re: The Plywood Hornet...And...The Canadians are in Town
Thanks Guys,
It was a lot of fun, and it'll be even better when we get this thing finished. Had a lot of 'artistic block' going on during it's construction that slowed up the whole deal, but it's much better now that we're coming to the final wrap-up.
No, this will be the last of my plywood aircraft manufacturing...gonna try to put a bunch of miles on both my bike and van, and try REAL hard to stay retired this time!
There'll be more photos showcasing Morgan's work and also when the airshow it's self happens.

Good work Kim, maybe your retirement project should be building pedal planes.

Kick the tires light the fires and take the thing off.
The exhaust cylinders, cardboard or PVC?
I had a pedal car similar in style when I was a kid. I thought it would be fun to "fly" down an almost vertical banking with it. It wasn't!

Yeah, I think gravity and aerodynamics let a LOT of us down during our early experiments with flight !!!!
There WAS talk of putting some kind of steering in the Baby Hornet and running it next time Cape has a Soap Box Derby !!!! That'll be some else's adventure !!!
The exhausts are handily chopped off plastic buckets, soon to be covered with foil. Katrina, the assistant airport manager, wants a smoke system like we had in the Baby Snowbird (my musician/boss's fog machine) for our Christmas Parade, so that may happen if they want to turn loose of more money.

Re: The Plywood Hornet...And...The Canadians are in Town
Forgive me, for there is no real comparison but the first time I saw "The Plywood Hornet" it reminded me of my Soap Box Derby racer that I built in the early 1950's and competed with for two years in the Manchester NH Derby. An early dismissal I came in second in each of my two heats.
But, it just so happened that I was the 100th entrant in the Derby that year, a first for NH. The NH Independent Food and Grocers Association unknown to me had agreed to sponsor the 100th entrant and pay for the cost of the car, about $18 most of it being for the wheels and axles. My only 15 minutes of fame. Big write-ups in the papers with lot's of pictures.

So, with the airshow, and predicted storms bearing down on us, the Baby Hornet gets it's color scheme applied.
With fins customized by Lineman Fran, maven of all things aircraft/historical:
The only thing left is to fashion a tow-bar, so that our plywood fighter may traverse the ramp, inspiring all who gaze upon her....

It's a beauty. I think it has enough wing to actually fly if your tow car gets going fast enough. maybe some dry ice and muffin fans in the tail pipes might add some thrust.

And, they arrive...
So, Snowbird Lead, challenges the Hornet Driver to a race...and wins. Of course, the Baby Hornet weighs in at about twice the Baby Snowbird, so...

Yeah, but the Hornet has a far superior targeting and weapons capability. Just wait till the Bird gets cocky, pulls ahead and waggles its tail at the Hornet. So, Snowbird Lead, challenges the Hornet Driver to a race...and wins. Of course, the Baby Hornet weighs in at about twice the Baby Snowbird, so...
It'll be kindling before it knows what hit it.
