Thank you Small Cox Logo

Here is how I did it, reusable cigar tubes. You can make them two!
Volume is around 2oz in total you cut them down to suit your needs  Smile
I used steel wool to remove the stenciled logo off the tube.

Thanks I did not recognize it was a cigar tube. What did you use to plug the bottom after you cut it in two?

I cut the tube almost in half the other end is already sealed.
Use silicon glue or thick CA to hold the cap on.

Yes best solution to avoid capping off the back portion of the tank
which would have added more weight and extra risk of leaks.

Leak check completed it holds fuel with no issues.
Weight check completed less fuel tube:
- Empty weight 5.6g
- Full weight 13.3g
- Fuel weight 7.7g

Could do a simple robust stick type plane with this aluminum tank, the RC gear would be boxed
in for protection from oil spray. This one is more of a fun fly 4ch plane meant to fly up close and
slow at times with a 4.5 x 2 for thrust and vertical climb with rudder to keep it tracking straight up.

Just a thought cuz I went to the e-bay link and saw two tubes for 8 bucks... kinda pricey IMO

I have dozens of various sized cigar tubes....smoker free now since July so no more BUT

If you have a cigar shop withing reasonable shopping distance.... stop in and ask the proprietor to put out the word..you want some empty aluminum tubes...one of his regular customers will let you have quite a few

I did this wanting a lot of wooden Cigar Boxes...one guy had thirty of all sizes I could have if I just come get them

Cigar boxes are actually made of great wood are real precisely made

Hi Fred, Yea cigar boxes are always nice to hold hobby stuff and such. The cigar tubes I am using
are the reusable type made of thicker walled aluminum hence the price. They are made
to carry your cigars on trips in sealed safe containment. The cigars that do come in aluminum
tubes are thin walled and will crush / ding easy. I paid $8.90 shipped for two, so $4.45 ea.
Lol these are the dirt cheap ones they make steel ones, carbon fiber and wood ones for more.
If you don't mind the wait time can buy from the far east for a cheaper price.

Happy Alternative source for tubes

Post  ffkiwi Tue Oct 23, 2018 6:57 pm

Gents here is an alternative source option: I am a scientist by training-in more recent years specialising in proteomics-quite a lot of which involves 2-D gel electrophoresis as an analytical technique-the tubes we get the pre-prepared IEF strips for the first part of the 2-D technique come in very nice screw top aluminium containers-that seem very similar to cigar tubes but stronger. I-being a modeller collected all our empties after use for future modelling use-though to be honest I was thinking in terms of making mufflers from them rather than tanks!

Anyway-getting to the point-these were/are a Biorad product-Biorad being one of the cutting edge US companies in the medical/scientific/biotechnology sphere-with a very wide product base-so you can just about guarantee their products will be in use at a university-and possibly even a hospital-near you.   The product was called ReadyStrip IPG strips [there were several length and isoelectric focussing pH ranges-but they all came in identical containers.  So a few local inquiries might turn up trumps for you!  Failing that-a query to Biorad themselves inquiring where they got the tubes from might lead you to the original source...     [I have taken pics but this site won't let me insert or paste  them-we'll see if the host functionality works..[added in edit..apparently not!     FWIW they measure 5.28 inches in length, OD is 0.854", ID 0.820, and the cap has a nice plastic internal seal (the product was meant to be stored at -20C so you didn't want moisture creeping in.

Thank you Chris,  Thumbs Up the site restricts you posting a photo for a short duration after
joining as some folks join just to spam or try to sell something etc. After a few posts / days
the software will allow you to load files to the posts. When that is possible please post a pic.

Per your description the 0.854" OD equates to 21.7mm
Small OD is one of my reasons for me trying the thick walled reusable cigar tubes.
The radial mount for the engine is the constant at 22mm. If I can keep the width of
the fuselage maxed at the firewall than going back to the wing saddle will be a plus
for weight savings and speed.

The current Nano TD .020 speed plane:
24.75mm at the leading edge of the wing.
21mm OD / 2.9g ultra-lite 1/2oz nylon tank being used currently.
The thin ply fuselage side panels where glued to the tank.
The tank is literally being used as a former for the fuselage.

The smaller dia. of the aluminum cigar tank will allow a more narrow fuselage as the OD is 16mm.
It's also eye candy so can be used in a open frame plane per the Stick .020 rendering.
Speed or floater still polished aluminum will always add to the aesthetics, aluminum in the
prop blast will naturally cool the fuel which is the primary goal.

I've just gone out to the workshop and weighed one of the Biorad tubes: 10.4g (including cap)-that with the dimensions I posted earlier should enable a comparison with the 'thick walled reusable cigar tubes' [for all I know we may both be describing the same thing...-but with different end users!] Anyway-your tank approach does inspire me to try a similar approach for an F1J model tank-and having several C/F front ends available I will have to see how things might potentially fit.....

Stock tube I am using is 6.3g / .63" OD x 4.5" L

Chris your tank find sounds perfect for 1/2 oz to 1.2 oz
How much fuel do you need for a F1J  FF tank?

I have made a 1.7oz aluminum tank just prior to the new cigar tube effort.

Not a lot-the engine run is only 5 seconds! But allowing for starting, setting and sufficient fuel for floodoff probably 20cc would be adequate (bearing in mind people tend to use bladders-which are fine-but messy-this tube approach would be a reversion to the old technology of a 'hard tank' for pressure feed. Some of the 'old guard' F1C fliers still use 'hard tanks'-the UK's Phil Ball being one-but there is quite a lot of engineering them- flange mountings O-rings etc-and this cigar tube approach offers a lightweight way around that.....

A quick check establishes that the volume of the complete tube brim full is 45ml-so a half tube length tank would be about 20cc give or take...and it strikes me just as I type this-that you could adopt (for my FF purposes at least) a 'belt and braces' approach-use a cut down tube to hold a bladder-giving you a compartment impervious to fuel in the event of a bladder leak/burst.....which is always the problem when you use a bladder or pacifier internally in the fuselage...not to mention the mess/damage caused if fuel gets in your clockwork or electronic timer as a result....

Thank you, I need to fly with the prototype and see how it goes expect it to work great! More show and tell for now early stages
proving it can be a valued component for sport flying as a nice low weight exhaust diverter for RC and CL flying also should help
control noise with a header extension, you can put a pressure tap on the extension to improve fuel draw and increase rpm.
Side exhaust will work too. If the result in the air is good chances are more will be made, I will post a link if it happens for now
at least I can show what's possible. Cool

Christmas Tree Thank you Gents! Thumbs Up  Rudolph

This rendering would be very suitable with potential to hit 150 mph ground speed.
4x5.5N at 32,000 rpm / 167 mph pitch speed. This one only needs 3/4th oz tank
about 12 passes in front of the camera and land any more fuel is extra weight.

Thank you, yes will do Gents!   Thumbs Up
CEF will be the first to know of availability / you can use K&S hobby store aluminum tube 8mm OD x 7mm ID.  Small Cox Logo
I am working on flying the engine next as the bench test performance was outstanding.
The results will encourage batch runs of these for folks to obtain, I need 3 more for my other projects.

Here is the most likely way I will go a belly lander as I fly on grass fields construction will start this week.
It is a smaller version of the 28" span NANO III which currently has a 05 car engine converted for aero use.
