For the TD .020 I have decided to go with 220mah LiFe batteries:
Dimensions: 1.2 x 0.90 x 0.47" (30 x 23 x 12mm) Weight: 0.53oz (15g)
The DSM 44 being high speed digital coreless motors should yield at least
7 eight min. flights per day at the field. Bummer they don't make 150 mah
LiFe batteries.

Gross width at the battery will allow the two servos to stack as shown
they are too tall to stand up this is the only way to make them fit in
the NANO X

Full size pic if you have enough monitor to display it, I will build from
this drawing.

Brad,

my servos work in a bit lower voltage range...are you not concerned with voltage overload on the servos, with the LiFe battery having 6,6 Volts rated voltage? (I had a few almost-mortal, in-flight problems with electronics, especially the servos and sometimes the battery, that I am a bit paranoic)

Will use a simple step down voltage regulator these are only 10mm wide and
very thin, can be put under the RX to drop it to a safe 5v. Using a 6.6v LiFe
battery in the Nano III has been great as they hold their charge for weeks
without voltage loss. I paid .99 cents each.

Steps down 6V to 12V In / 5V Out  / AMS1117:

Brad, beautiful, as always...

You may want to try this 400mAh NiMH I use in my small birds...gives you confidence that 5 or more 10 minutes flights will still not leave you without juice in the battery in the field, or worse, mid-air...

Thank you St.Pats Beers

No can't do that it would weigh too much, 400mah with
Hitec Ultra Nano servos would yield 10 or more flights.

Note thumb in the pic shows just how small the gear is.
The 220 mah LiFe pack is too big.

Going with this engine and RC carb complements from a G-Mark .030
influx a bit larger dia. then stock. Greg is going to send a few test manifolds
will tap the header for tank pressure and post results to compare to this vid / prop.
the .050 responded very well to the pressure tap I expect a similar boost in rpm.

Published on Oct 27, 2017
Cox TD .020 RC Carb /mod E-flite to 3.75x4 / 23,032 rpm / 87 mph
.069hp / 51.47w / 87 mph / 4.6oz thrust / 25% nitro / 20% castor
Enough thrust to take the Nano IV straight up. The Cyclone prop
should hit about 122 mph static prop speed.

Wing cut out from SIG 3"x36' airfoil balsa.
Easy part done now have to induce a new airfoil
shaped for speed, in stock form the panel is a
simple Clark Y. Cheater hatch to have just enough
clearance to slide the RX past the throttle and elevator
servos. Same thing was done with the N-III

Span is 19.5" / 44 sq.in. it's going to be a micro bullet.
Potential for shocking high speed verticals with a TD .02

Sawdust moments later the wings airfoil is complete with

Another battery option came in the mail 80mah nimh.
I had used the 150mah in the Lil Speedy this is some
reasonable weight savings and will allow the elevator and
throttle servo room to move forward eliminating the need
for a rear hatch behind the wing. Will see how it goes
after I define the final wing location.

Tail feathers done with most of the gear in the CG is looking good with the 80mah battery.
As shown less push rods, surface horns, aileron servo and on/off switch 94g / 3.3oz
Will be under 4oz RTF est. 3.8oz not bad for a ply / spruce fuselage very strong.

Brad,

amazing pace at which you build this one too..does SIG sell pre-shaped airfoil balsa? Do you add any hidden spar made of spruce, carbon rod or similar, to enhance wing strength?

The Nano III had a carbon kevlar skinned fuselage this time I wanted
to try the regular carbon skin. I imagine a bright neon for the rudder
and matching neon for the lettering and race numbers on the wing.
May use 20 for the race number perhaps on the side of the fuselage too.
Neon yellow explodes off the surface when set on black carbon skin.

I plan to use black carbon on the wings and elevator this one has gone
to the dark side Eyebrows
I may commission some cnc foam fuselages to try in various sizes with
pulled carbon sock / bagged for a smooth glossy finish. With a TD .010 this
one would be fast but very manageable for most pilots and a floater off power.
Should be a sweetie with the .020 all the same.
Next version will be for a TD .15 and the Mark II goal is to bust 170 +

Last time I did a all black theme was with a glider which was just fine as soon
as the thing was up in a thermal all you ever saw was a profile anyways. This
one is so small at 120 ft it will profile so black should do just fine. The yellow
neon is enough to track the tail with any amount of light on it.  Small Cox Logo

Forced perspective makes the tail look bigger than it really is:

Getting closer went with a metal gear stronger servo for the ailerons (there was room after all)
Down to putting the neon yellow letters and numbers on the wing and setting up the servos.
After I am happy with the wings position and sure the CG is perfect I will make the hatch for
accessing charging the batteries.

It has been a enjoyable project to build the Nano for the TD .020
The black carbon finish makes for a cheap alternative to the real thing.

Thank you for the greenie Mauricio, should shatter the old 106 mph record!

I have the new 3 blade 5.6P Cyclone props to test in the air the bench testing resulted in 118 mph
static this is a major leap in static speed over all previous props. The Cyclone makes 2.6oz thrust enough
to launch a 4oz plane with no struggle. Potential for 140+ mph brief down wind passes in front of the
camera is possible. Although brief top end the plane should maintain around 120+ into the wind.

I have also sourced new 4P props /4.6oz static thrust shown in the other pics the 2 blade should do better than
the previous 3.75x3P props that hit 92mph with unlimited vertical with the Lil Speedy. Expect to hit 120 mph with
those and good thrust in all directions. Always watching for new prop designs for these small engines.

The ailerons are set up using clipped down 1/2A horns and clipped down servo horn wire gauge was
carefully selected to be just enough without adding useless weight / stiffness. Rubber bands are the
UVA / oil resistant type used by fishing enthusiasts. Carbon rod for the wing dowels.
